RSA vs AUS Match Preview

Mangaung Oval is the fixture for the first one-day game of the ODI series between Australia and South Africa. The South Africans played their last one-day game against the Netherlands when the Dutch team was visiting South Africa earlier in the year. In the 3rd and last one-day international game of the series, South Africa batted first to score 370 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. The Netherlands could just muster up 224 runs all out in 39.1 overs. South Africa won the game easily with a margin of 146 runs. Aiden Markram was adjudged player of the match as he smashed 175 runs from 126 balls and also picked up a couple of wickets.

The South Africans were okay with the efforts of the batters in the T20I series. But their bowling unit could not make much of an impression on their opposition. The South African had not played much international cricket for five months after hosing the Caribbeans at the end of summer last year. The bowling attack in the T20 series was led by Lungi Ngidi in the absence of Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada. Ngidi went wicketless in the series. His variations were not effective and even other bowlers such as Coetzee, Tabraiz Shamsi, Marco Jensen, Bjorn Fortuin, and Lizaad Williams all conceded over 10 runs per over.

The young Australian team on the other hand impressed one and all. Tanveer Sangha the young leg spinner picked up 4 wickets for 31 runs in his debut. He was the second-highest wicket-taker in the T20I series despite not playing in the second T20I game. Matthew Short played a match-winning 66 from 30 balls in the second game. In this game, Aussies chased down a decent target of 165 runs with as many as 31 balls to spare. Spencer Johnson picked up 2 wickets for 33 runs in the first game. He once again bowled economically in the 3rd match.

Australia played their last one-day game against India in India. It was a day/night game played in Chennai earlier in the year. Australians batted first in the game to score 269 runs all out. Indians made a game attempt at chasing the target when they scored 248 all out from 49.1 overs. They fell short by a margin of 21 runs. The Aussie bowler Adam Zampa was adjudged player of the match for his 4-wicket haul giving away 45 runs. The key factor in this game was the performance of the Aussie middle order that contributed 20s and 30s to their team's cause.

Pitch Report

As many as 31 one-day international matches have been played at this venue in Bloemfontein. The team batting first has won 14 of these games while the team batting second has won 16. One of the games ended in a tie. The average first innings score here is 246 runs. It is a good track to bat on and the skipper winning the toss might opt to bat or field first depending on the confidence he has in the surface. But we reckon the skipper winning the toss will opt to field first and know the exact number of runs he will need to get to win the match.
