RSA vs AUS Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Sep 07, 2023

After Australia crushed South Africa in a T20I series, 3-0, we’re now approaching the ODI series and hopefully get a more balanced outcome. South Africa will again be the hosts and there will be a five-game series for the one-day games. The squads will be fairly similar to those that played in the T20I series, although there are a few notable additions and subtractions, which we’ll mention below.

South Africa vs. Australia will take place at the Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein, on September 7th. Take a look at our betting sites page for recommendations about the best providers.

South Africa

Even if they weren’t amazing in the T20I series against Australia, the good news for the team is the return of big names like Quinton de Kock, David Miller, Kagiso Rabada, Heinrich Klaasen, and Anrich Nortje.

The inclusion of Rabada and Nortje, especially, will be a huge boost to the bowling, as South Africa allowed Australia far too many easy runs. Ngidi is typically a reliable bowler in ODI games (5.73 ER), but was terrible in the T20I matches with a final tally of 0/108. It was a surprise to see Williams dropped for the ODI matches, as he was great with 4/85, but the team should be much better with Rabada and Nortje.

The batting certainly got better with each game, as South Africa did well to score 190 in the third match, but were just outclassed by Australia in the end. Still, it’s a good sign, and if Hendricks (101 runs) can continue his solid form, then the team is in a positive spot.

Markram has 440 runs over his last 9 matches and is usually reliable, while de Kock (44.85 average) is a must-have in the lineup. We hoped for more from Brevis, who scored just 5 runs in the T20I series, but he’s still incredibly young and could gain confidence in the next five matches.

South Africa Playing 11

Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada.

Australia

Due to Mitchell Marsh’s excellent captaincy during the T20I games, not to mention his stellar batting (186 runs), he will again captain Australia in the ODI matches. Although Cummins is usually the ODI captain, he’s still coming back from injury and is being rested for the upcoming World Cup.

There are a few other major names missing from the Aussie lineup, including Smith, Starc, and Maxwell (all injured), but the likes of Warner, Hazlewood, Labuschagne, and Green have returned. Wicketkeeper/batter Inglis remains in the squad, but Carey will be the first choice for this role. From the T20I series, only Turner, Short, and David will be absent.

Although Australia relied heavily on Marsh’s batting, it was good to finally see Head make a quality contribution with 115 runs. We can expect Marsh and Head to continue the great batting, but we’d like to see more from Warner and Green. Neither was spectacular in the Ashes series, but Warner is an ODI veteran (45.00 average) and Green has proved worthy in only 12 innings with a 50.33 average.

Abbott is likely to be one of the top bowlers again, as he was incredible in the T20I series with 8/70, and currently has 13 wickets in only 11 ODI innings. We know what Hazlewood is capable of and he’s going to cause trouble with that 4.57 ER (108 wickets). It will be interesting to see if spinner Sangha gets into the final XI, as he played great in two T20I games with 5/70, even if Zampa is usually the No. 1 option.

Australia Playing 11

David Warner, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, Marcus Stoinis, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa.

RSA vs AUS Betting Tips

The 10Cric odds certainly suggest that Australia is the favourite here, but we think it’s a better option to go with South Africa on this one. The odds are quite generous and there’s a good chance of a big return here. The team has been bolstered by quality players for the ODI series, and the batting was excellent in the last T20I match.

It’s true that the South African bowling was pretty terrible, but Rabada and Nortje are veterans who know that they can’t give easy deliveries to excellent Aussie batters. Plus, you’d hope that Ngidi could shake off the bad T20I matches and come in refreshed again.

South Africa has beaten Australia in the last three ODI games back in 2020, and while that was some time ago, it’s an indication that there’s real talent here and the home pitches should help.

Hendricks was the only batter in the T20I series to score over 100 (101 total runs), but he does also do well in ODI games with a solid average of 27.76. His odds are really interesting and there's a good return, so it's worth a try ahead of other players in the team.

Marsh was amazing in the T20I series with 8 sixes, and although we think South Africa will win, it's still likely Marsh continues his big hitting and picks up at least 3-4 sixes in this match. Plus, the odds are decent.

Although Bavuma took a while to get going in the T20I series, he looked better in the second game with 35 runs. De Kock has looked great in the American T20 League, so this pairing has the ability to score big if their minds are in the zone. De Kock averages 44.85 in ODI games and the odds are much better, so this chance is not to be missed.
