PAKW vs WIW Match Preview

We saw a dominant display from the West Indian skipper Hayley Matthews in the first ODI of the bilateral series on the 18th. This meant the West Indians provided a winning start to their tour of Pakistan. This crushing 113-run win means they have further stretched their winning record in Pakistan. They have now won seven games since 2004. After a well-compiled 140-run effort, Matthews followed it up with three-fer for 17. She could do no wrong on the day, and this effort was one of the rare occasions in women's ODI cricket when a player managed to pull off a hundred and a three-fer.

Matthews batted right through the innings, hitting fifteen boundaries and a six in her effort that stretched to 150 balls. She lost the opening partner Rashada Williams early but carried on with Shemaine Campbelle with a second wicket stand, realizing 102 runs. Although there wasn't any other partnership during the rest of the West Indies inning, many middle and lower-middle-order batters contributed to the total. There were contributions of 32 runs, 40 runs, and 42 runs for the 4th, 5th, and 6th wicket with Chedean Nation, Chinelle Henry, and Aaliyah Alleyne that helped West Indies reach a total of 269 runs for the loss of eight wickets.

While chasing this total, Pakistani women were immediately up against it. They were required to set a new record for a successful run chase. The last most successful chase for Pakistan women was 243 runs. Pakistan Women did not get off to a good start and lost the wickets of Bismah Maroof and Sidra Amin early in the first five overs. Their performance improved a bit after Nida Dar and Muneeba Ali took their score to 59 for two in the 12th over. This is when the West Indies skipper contributed by picking the wicket of Nida Dar with the ball.

The loss of their captain meant Pakistan would never recover from the slump. There were no further partnerships of note in the Pakistan inning. However, we saw a brusque 37-run stand between Tuba and Najiha Alvi for the seventh wicket; it was already too late. The Pakistan Women's team folded with the score at 156 runs in the 36th over. It is significant to note that the next two one-day international games between the West Indies and Pakistan Women will be played at the same venue, the National Stadium in Karachi.

Pitch Report

Batting first on this track will be the best alternative for any skipper winning the toss. The surface is likely to help the spinners in the second half of the game. It will be easier to bat first and set a target rather than bat second and play on a turning track.
