Sydney Thunder Women

Sydney Thunder hasn’t had the best of times in the last couple of editions of the WBBL. In the last season, the team managed to win just 1 of the 14 matches they played and finished at the bottom of the points table. As they begin a fresh campaign, Thunder will be eager to put up a better performance.

Thunder has gone for a rich mix of youth and experienced players in the hope of turning its fortunes around. Rachael Haynes, who has been an integral part of the team, has retired. The team has also bid adieu to players like Tammy Beaumont, Amy Jones, and Chloe Tryon to make room for some fresh faces.

The biggest addition is undoubtedly that of Marizanne Kapp, who brings an edge in both, batting as well as bowling department. Heather Knight, who was a part of the 2020-21 title-winning team makes a comeback along with Lauren Bell. Other key players include Chamari Athapaththu and Phoebe Litchfield.

Thunder has a rich pace attack thanks to the presence of local talent Hannah Darlington and Ebony Hoskin, while Samantha Bates will lead the spin department. 

Sydney Sixers Women

The Sixers, who were the runner-ups in the last season, didn’t have the best of starts this time as they were defeated by Melbourne Stars in a close encounter during the season opener. Nevertheless, it is still quite early in the tournament and the team has a good opportunity to bounce back.

Ashleigh Gardner, who was the player of the tournament last season, once again looked in fine form as she picked up 2 wickets and also scored 72 runs, albeit for a losing cause. The Sixers have a strong top order consisting of batters like Alyssa Healy, Suzie Bates, and Kate Pelle.

The team will bank on them to give a solid start. The Sixers miss out on the services of Sophie Ecclestone and Nicole Bolton for this season, leaving the spin attack vulnerable against quality batting line-ups. They have tried to fill in the gap by bringing in Chloe Tryon, who had a decent outing against the Stars.

Ellyse Perry, who missed the first match, is set to make a return. She will add depth to batting as well as bowling. Lauren Cheatle and Maitlan Brown will headline the seam attack along with Kate Peterson, while Gardner, Tryon, and Linsey Smith will feature in the spin attack.
