South Australia Redbacks

In their last game in the Sheffield Shield competition, South Australians fairly belted the New South Wales outfit. The stars of this game for South Australia were McSweeney and McAndrew. The maiden 10-wicket haul by McAndrew and the scores of 100 and 64 runs put together by McSweeney helped the South Australians in recording an easy 186-run victory. McAndrew provided an outstanding performance with the ball picking up two 5-wicket hauls including a fifer in the second inning for just 19 runs.

McAndrew single-handedly restricted the New South Wales batting charge at Adelaide Oval. This was the first time this 30-year-old seamer succeeded in picking up 10 wickets in a game. However, the player of the match award went to McSweeney for his terrific batting display scoring 64 and 100 runs in this game where just 3 other batters succeeded in crossing the 50-run mark. The next highest score in this game was from Daniel Hughes who scored 58 runs. None of the other South Australian batters could get past a score of 33 runs in either of the innings.

Despite this win, the South Australians will look to improve their overall performance in both batting and bowling departments. McAndrew started the last day of the game with 9 wickets already to his credit. He reduced the NSW team to 99 for 6 taking 4 for 19 on the penultimate day of the match. He was strangely not used immediately in the morning of the last day. But did end up picking up a wicket in the end when Jackson Bid got out caught in the gully and NSW were bowled out for 136 runs. You can expect McAndrew to do well again in this game.

Western Australia

The Western Australia unit played their last match against Tasmania. They were on course for a victory in this game but Tasmanians hung on to ensure a draw. Just 18 wickets fell in the first ten sessions of this match. But the match suddenly came to life on 4th day as WA bowlers ran through the brittle Tasmanian batting line-up. Tasmania was reduced to 70 for 5 early on in the final session before Brad Hope and Beau Webster hung on to salvage a draw in the end. The WACA wicket was surprisingly docile in this game.

The up-and-coming off-spinner for Western Australia, Corey Rocchiccioli kept his good start to the season going in this game. He targeted the rough created by the bowlers to trouble the left-handers no end. He ended the game with a haul of 5 wickets and he remains the bowler to watch out for in this game as well. The fast bowler Lance Morris was impressive in his comeback despite having missed first-class cricket after March. He also had to miss the Ashes due to a back injury.

The workload offered to Lance Morris was managed but he still bowled with hostility and regularly hit the 140 kmph mark. He picked up 3 wickets from his 32 overs in the game. But he is likely to be rested for this game against South Australia starting tomorrow. The Western Australian skipper agreed that they did a good job on a flat surface and put Tasmania under a lot of pressure. They nearly got a win in this game. The Western Australia team will be buoyed with the late effort put in by their batters.
