RSA vs AUS Team Previews

South Africa

South Africa is finally starting to heat up and show the world that there’s life in this team. After losing the first three T20I games and the following two ODI matches, South Africa has won two in a row to even the series.

The fourth game victory was thanks largely to Klaasen’s stunning 174 runs from 83 deliveries (13 fours and 13 sixes). Overall, the team managed a whopping 416 runs in the first innings, which Australia could never get close to. There was also help from de Kock (45), van der Russen (62) and Miller (82), which was especially important as Bavuma was injured. Bavuma is expected to return for the fifth and final ODI match.

It wasn’t just the batters that excelled on the Centurion pitch, as the bowlers also stepped up their game with a pummelling attack that wouldn’t relent all game. Pace bowlers Ngidi (4/51) and Rabada (3/41) were the biggest threats to the Aussies, who just couldn’t find any momentum. Although fast bowler Nortje is ruled out of the fifth game due to injury, South Africa looks good enough here.

South Africa Playing 11

Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Andile Phehlukwayo, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi.

Australia

It looked bad when Australia lost the third ODI by 111 runs, but now things look terrible after the embarrassing 164-run defeat. Major questions will be asked of both the batting and bowling line-ups, although the biggest concern is that of Travis Head. Unfortunately for Australia, Head retired hurt after getting hit on his left hand, and could also miss the World Cup.

Losing opening batter Head is a big loss, as he’s been rock solid during this South Africa series, and has scored 481 runs (average of 60.13) in his last 10 ODI games. Australia has enough talented batters to replace Head, but it’s still a shame for the World Cup. Carey was the only batter in the fourth game to make a real effort, as he scored 99 runs (annoyingly close to 100), but no other batter could help much. Stoinis isn’t much use so far, with just 45 runs in three ODI games.

It will be interesting to see if spinner Sangha will replace Zampa for the fifth game, as Zampa was simply destroyed across the pitch, getting smashed for 113 runs without a wicket (11.30 ER). Pacer Hazlewood didn’t have as much luck as the South Africans with his speed, picking up 2/79 in 10 overs.

Australia Playing 11

David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Timothy David, Michael Neser, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa.

RSA vs AUS Toss Prediction

Pitch and Conditions

The Johannesburg pitch is fairly balanced, with both pace bowlers and batters having fantastic games here in the past. It’s quite a high-scoring pitch, with the average first innings score around 246 runs. Out of 51 ODI games played here, 28 have been won by the team bowling first, so it’s pretty even. The weather in Johannesburg is going to be a perfect 27°C.

RSA vs AUS Betting Tips

The Parimatch odds for South Africa have dropped a little bit for the fifth game, but they are still better than Australia’s. It’s definitely worth betting on South Africa, based on the improved odds and their great performances in the last two games.

The home team has all the momentum and both batters and bowlers are gaining in confidence and skill. The loss of Australia’s Travis Head is notable, and it could be that the Aussies are running out of gas after a long series away from home. The South Africans will wrap up the ODI series with another convincing win to take everything 3-2.

Bet on South Africa to win.

Although Ngidi has bowled in just two ODI games, he has great stats of 5/93 and is in form right now. He'll definitely have a chance to shine with Nortje out of the lineup. Look for him to make a strong impact in the last ODI match on a fast pitch.

He might have had one duck in the ODI series, but he's otherwise been solid with a fantastic performance of 49 & 174 in other games. He'll likely gain confidence and be more aggressive in a must-win game for South Africa.

Australia is in some doubt with its opening partnership now that Head is injured. For South Africa, de Kock and Bavuma should be back together, and they've always looked great to start. Bavuma (217 runs) and de Kock (183) will be ready to get South Africa off to a big start if they win the toss and bat first, which seems likely.

    Top Batter Australia: Marnus Labuschagne

Marsh hasn't been so great in this series so far, and Head is now injured. Warner can be good at times, but we still think this needs to be a match for Labuschagne. He needs to make a good impression to reach the World Cup squad, and he's the leading run-scorer in this series with 239.
