Queensland was successful in maintaining a competitive edge during the last season of Sheffield Shield viz. in the 2022-23 season. However, they ended up missing out on the trophy in the final. They have also added Ben McDermott to their team as an import from Tasmania to add strength to the team in the top order. He did not do too well last season but is expected to make amends.

After Queensland was asked to bat first after losing the toss, the team was dismissed quickly for a total of 176 runs. This game was played at the Sydney Showground Stadium in Queensland. But despite this poor display in their first inning, they made a strong comeback in their second inning scoring 417 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. New South Wells outfit had succeeded in getting 446 runs on the board in their first innings and Queensland was lucky to escape with a draw.

The standout performers for Queensland in this match were Jimmy Peirson and Michael Nesar who both scored hundreds putting together 106 and 140 runs respectively. Jack David Wildermuth scored a valuable 52 runs not out during this effort lower down the order. Queensland will be expecting big runs from the batter Matt Renshaw. It was a rematch of the last couple of Sheffield Shield final matches and WA once again seemed to have Victoria's number as they showcased a super depth in talent for their team. Victoria was asked to bat first in this game and they scored 256 runs while batting first. WA in response piled up 481 runs on the board and then bowled out the Victorians for a small total of 172 runs.

But despite taking this loss the fact remains that Victoria has the side that is capable of making a comeback. Under the leadership of their new skipper Will Sutherland, they have all the necessary ingredients to take the side to another shot at the title. Their main batter though is still Peter Handscomb. During the last season, he amassed 634 runs within just 6 games with the highest score of not out 281 runs. He did not do too well in the Queensland's last match. He is likely to make a big comeback in this game though.

Will Pucovski will miss this game as he is being utilized for better productivity by the Victorian team management. The Victoria opener Travis Dean appeared to be in good touch in the last match scoring 87 and 22 runs respectively from their two innings. He was not in much of form during the Victoria last season but it is expected that he will do a better job this time around. Victoria also has a well-balanced bowling attack. Scott Boland will be available for the tournament. He has made a great start to his test career by picking up 35 wickets from his first 10 games with an average of 20.34.

Victorians will be expecting that Boland can carry forward the momentum into this Sheffield Shield contest and the upcoming season. Will Sutherland is a seam bowling all-rounder and had figures of 3 for 66 in his earlier match. He completed the season as the leading wicket-taker for Victoria with 41 wickets from ten games at an average of 19.82. These two bowlers together with another good alternative for Victoria is Todd Murphy. He is a dependable spinner for the Victorian bowling attack and seems to be in good form.
