QSL vs VAC Team Previews

Queensland

Queensland was successful in maintaining a competitive edge during the last season of Sheffield Shield viz. in the 2022-23 season. However, they ended up missing out on the trophy in the final. They have a stable outfit and you can expect them to be one of the top contenders for the trophy this year as well. They have also added Ben McDermott to their team as an import from Tasmania to add strength to the team in the top order. He did not do too well last season but is expected to make amends.

Queensland played the first game of the season against New South Wales and the game ended in a draw. After Queensland was asked to bat first after losing the toss, the team was dismissed quickly for a total of 176 runs. This game was played at the Sydney Showground Stadium in Queensland. But despite this poor display in their first inning, they made a strong comeback in their second inning scoring 417 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. New South Wells outfit had succeeded in getting 446 runs on the board in their first innings and Queensland was lucky to escape with a draw.

The standout performers for Queensland in this match were Jimmy Peirson and Michael Nesar who both scored hundreds putting together 106 and 140 runs respectively. Jack David Wildermuth scored a valuable 52 runs not out during this effort lower down the order. Queensland will be expecting big runs from the batter Matt Renshaw. This talented opening batter did well in the second innings scoring 55 runs and will look to develop momentum in the competition. They also had the services of Usman Khawaja in their middle order. He was expected to score big during the season after a successful streak in the international season. But he has been rested to keep him fresh for the international season.

As far as the Queensland bowling attack is concerned, they will rely on Mitchell Swepson to get breakthroughs. He hit 39.66 in the Sheffield Shield last summer however, he will be keen to improve with each game. This leg-spinner picked up figures of 3 for 73 in their last game on a flat wicket. With the season progressing he is expected to contribute more scalps to the Queensland credit. Another crucial bowler for Queensland is Neser who was the top wicket-taker for his team during last season with his seam bowling. He has already picked up a 3-wicket haul during this season.

Victoria

Victoria lost their last game against Western Australia badly by a margin of an innings. The second-string bowling attack used by Western Australia managed to overwhelm Victoria on a sluggish WACA wicket. It was a rematch of the last couple of Sheffield Shield final matches and WA once again seemed to have Victoria's number as they showcased a super depth in talent for their team. Victoria was asked to bat first in this game and they scored 256 runs while batting first. WA in response piled up 481 runs on the board and then bowled out the Victorians for a small total of 172 runs.

But despite taking this loss the fact remains that Victoria has the side that is capable of making a comeback. Under the leadership of their new skipper Will Sutherland, they have all the necessary ingredients to take the side to another shot at the title. Their main batter though is still Peter Handscomb. During the last season, he amassed 634 runs within just 6 games with the highest score of not out 281 runs. He did not do too well in the Queensland's last match. He is likely to make a big comeback in this game though.

Will Pucovski will miss this game as he is being utilized for better productivity by the Victorian team management. The Victoria opener Travis Dean appeared to be in good touch in the last match scoring 87 and 22 runs respectively from their two innings. He was not in much of form during the Victoria last season but it is expected that he will do a better job this time around. Victoria also has a well-balanced bowling attack. Scott Boland will be available for the tournament. He has made a great start to his test career by picking up 35 wickets from his first 10 games with an average of 20.34.

Victorians will be expecting that Boland can carry forward the momentum into this Sheffield Shield contest and the upcoming season. Will Sutherland is a seam bowling all-rounder and had figures of 3 for 66 in his earlier match. He completed the season as the leading wicket-taker for Victoria with 41 wickets from ten games at an average of 19.82. These two bowlers together with another good alternative for Victoria is Todd Murphy. He is a dependable spinner for the Victorian bowling attack and seems to be in good form.

QSL vs VAC Toss Prediction

The weather during the game is likely to be nice and sunny. These conditions will be fantastic for batting and the side winning the toss will look to bat first.

Pitch and Conditions

The last game played at the Great Barrier Reef was an unofficial test match between the New Zealand A team and the Australia A team. This game was the 2nd match of the series and was played last month. It was a low-scoring game and Australia A was set a medium-sized target of scoring 302 runs for winning the game. However, they were bowled out for a score of 233 runs. Any skipper winning the toss will opt to bat first in the game and will look to score close to 350 runs in the inning.

The wicket on offer at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in MacKay will be conducive for stroke play and batters are likely to enjoy the conditions. Seamers will not get too much lateral movement on this ground. But they must try and get a good bounce and carry. The good fast bowlers can enjoy these conditions and trouble the new batsmen at the crease. After the batters have settled, they can score big on this track. The weather in MacKay is likely to be nice and sunny throughout the 4 days of the contest.

QSL vs VAC Betting Tips

In the last 5 contests between Queensland and Victoria, Victoria has succeeded in winning two games while Queensland has succeeded in winning one. The remaining couple of games ended in draws. Both these sides have assembled well-balanced sides in the season. But Victoria appears to have a better team man-to-man and so, has a stronger unit between the two teams. The Queensland bowling attack doesn’t appear to be threatening and can cost them dearly on a flat wicket. However, Queensland did a better job in their last matches by getting a draw. We will bet with Queensland to win this contest and improve their position in the points table.
