ENG vs NZ Team Previews

England

England started the T20 series on a strong note, winning the first two games of the 4-match series. However, they squandered away the advantage by allowing the visitors to level.

England has made a few changes in the squad that played the T20 series in a bid to fine-tune the squad for the ODI World Cup. The biggest addition by far is that of Ben Stokes, who announced his retirement from the format last year. However, his role may only be limited to that of a batsman.

Harry Brook will miss this series but the return of Jason Roy and Joe Root will strengthen the batting. Depth in batting continues to be a massive strength for England.

They were the ones that pioneered the attack at all times and at all costs mantra in ODI cricket. That could be crucial once more with the World Cup being held in India where high-scores are common.

Gus Atkinson, who was quite impressive in his T20 debut, has been retained his spot. He will be joined by Reece Topley, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, and Brydon Carse in the seam attack, while Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali are the two quality spinners.

Wicket-taking through the middle with Wood and Rashid is going to be the real key in this battle.

New Zealand

New Zealand mounted a stunning comeback in the final two T20s and will enter this contest on a high. They will go all-out to win this match and get an early advantage.

Just like the hosts, New Zealand has made some changes to the squad from the T20 series to get their players ready for the marquee event beginning in October. Henry Nicholls will join the team and will likely open the batting. He has shown good form in the recent ODIs and Test matches and the team will bank on him to play a big inning.

Will Young is another solid performer in the top order, while Tom Latham, who will also lead the team in the 50-over format, will be an important player in the middle order. New Zealand has a lot of all-rounders in its lineup, similar to England, and that is where it can find some flexibility to adjust to the conditions.

The pace attack gets more bite with the return of Trent Boult as he joins the other seamers who featured in the T20s as well. Ish Sodhi misses the bus, leaving Mitchell Santner as the only quality spinner on the squad. No front-line wrist-spinner in the squad is something that we think could hurt New Zealand.

ENG vs NZ Toss Prediction

The team bowling first has won 18 of the 28 completed ODIs on this ground. We, therefore, think that the winner of the toss will likely opt to field first.

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch at the Sophia Gardens isn’t the easiest to bat on. There is a covering of grass that will help the seamers get plenty of movement from the seam. The batsmen will have to play cautiously in the first half. The surface does even out gradually and gets easier to bat on under the lights. A score of around 240 is a par score.

The weather is expected to be a bit cloudy with temperatures between 20-25 degrees Celsius.

ENG vs NZ Betting Tips

While New Zealand has played well during the last week to level the T20 series, the home team has made some changes that are likely to have a positive impact on their performance, especially in the batting department. We, therefore, feel that the home team is at an advantage.

The pitch at Sophia Gardens isn’t the easiest to bat on. The average run rate on this ground over the past 29 matches is 5.25. As both sides have a good bowling unit, we think it is unlikely that any team will be able to score over 19 runs in a single over.

Only 3 of the last 10 matches played on this ground have seen a century scored. Out of the players from both teams, only Jason Roy has managed to score a century. We, therefore, will take a punt that no player will be able to score a century in this match.

Jason Roy is likely to open the batting alongside Johnny Bairstow. They have scored an aggregate of 2922 runs at an average of 58.44 in 50 matches. We are therefore backing them to put up yet another good opening partnership.
