Durban's Super Giants showed plenty of promise at the start of the 2023 SA20 with two wins in three matches before slipping to four consecutive defeats. Their campaign then ended with a washout and two more wins, but it was not enough to reach the semi-final stage of the competition.

Durban have a new captain in Keshav Maharaj. He has taken over from Quinton de Kock, who will still play and recently returned from a stint with the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League in Australia. The Super Giants have lost seamer Kyle Abbott to injury, but have bolstered their batting resources with the late signing of the Proteas' Tony de Zorzi.

The presence of England seamers Reece Topley and Richard Gleeson is a big boost for Durban's bowling resources, especially after Abbott's exit. Together, these two could form one of the most challenging pairings in the tournament.

The participation of de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen alone makes Durban's batting order the most threatening of the lot. Both have retired from Test cricket and both have a focus on short-format competition. MI Cape Town's bowling attack will have a tall task against these two - individually and collectively.

Robin Peterson has become head coach and Lasith Malinga is their new fast-bowling coach. Peterson won the inaugural Major League Cricket title in the United States of America with MI New York last year. MI Cape Town also have a new captain in Kieron Pollard, who is there in Rashid Khan's absence.

Khan is injured. It's not so much his leadership that will be missed, but more his leg-spin. This could be a big opportunity for new recruit Thomas Kaber to step up. He, too, is a wrist-spinner - but a left-armer. Left-arm wrist-spinners are rare and possess a certain x-factor.

MI Cape Town would like to get as much as possible out of Liam Livingstone this time. The England big-hitter was on their books last season, but didn't feature amid injury and other unavailability issues. Locally, they have that man Dewald Brevis to go big.

During last year's SA20, Kingsmead produced completed first-innings totals of 190, 216, 80 and 165. High scores gradually tapered off. Early in the tournament this season, a first-innings total of 180-plus could be considered competitive.

Even though Kingsmead can produce seaming wickets, it's well worth playing two specialist spinners here - and perhaps open the bowling with one of them.
