SLW vs WIW Match Preview

The first one-day international between West Indies and Sri Lanka was one-sided. The hosts controlled the proceedings from the word Go in the series opener. Batting first, the West Indies Women could muster up 195 runs and were bowled out in 47.1 overs. Their skipper, Hayley Matthews, was their top run-getter, scoring 38 runs from 53 balls. Stefanie Taylor also scored 33 runs from 56 balls. Another batter that looked good for a while was Shermaine Campbelle with 27 runs.

Most of the West Indies frontline bowlers went wicket-less. It was left to Afy Fletcher and Aaliyah Alleyne to pick up a couple of wickets to restore parity to the proceeding. Alleyne also bowled economically, giving away 22 runs from her six overs. Fletcher was a tad more expensive, giving away 31 runs from her 5.1 overs for her two wickets. None of the other frontline West Indies bowlers could make much of an impression, and most of them were milked for runs by the Sri Lankan top-order batters.

The Sri Lankan bowlers tested successful immediately during the West Indies innings, with Kaluriya sending back Rashada Williams esarly. There was a good partnership between the skipper Hayley Matthews and Shermaine Campbelle after that when they realized 68 runs for the second wicket. But Sugantika Kumari made a big dent in the West Indian batting order, picking up three wickets for 30 runs from 9.1 overs. Towards the end of the West Indies innings, Kavisha Dilhari also picked up three wickets for 41 runs from her 9.1 overs.

Sugandika Kumari was easily the pick of the Lankan bowling attack, though and she also bowled economically while picking up wickets. The Sri Lankan, opening ball pair, also bowled a tight line and did not allow any free opportunities to score runs quickly. Chamari Athapaththu also bowled well in the late stages of the West Indies innings, picking up one wicket for 21 runs from her seven overs. Achini Kulasuriya also picked up one wicket for 30 runs from her eight overs and is also bowling economically.
