AUS vs PAK Match Preview

Australia has officially announced its squad for the second Test, and to no surprise, there are no unexpected selections. The inclusion of Lance Morris in the BBL indicates that there is minimal likelihood of any changes in the playing eleven.

However, there is a possibility that Scott Boland may enter the conversation and potentially replace Mitchell Starc in the event of a minor injury concern. Nevertheless, we do not believe that such a scenario will arise.

Australia's bowling lineup is exceptionally formidable and can be considered one of the best quartets in Test history. With the likes of Hazelwood, Starc, Cummins, and Lyon, the Pakistani batsmen can expect a relentless onslaught every time they face these bowlers. This is an absolute certainty.

In recent seasons, Melbourne's pitch has displayed a livelier nature, and it is hoped that this trend will continue, providing the bowlers with something to work with.

Lyon is expected to play a significant role in the second innings and could potentially emerge as the leading wicket-taker in the match. However, the only concern lies in the Pakistani batting lineup succumbing to the Australian fast bowlers without putting up a fight.

The Australian batsmen, including David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja, Travis Head, and Mitchell Marsh, form a top-6 that will prove challenging to dismiss.

Pakistan's bowling attack displayed a lackluster performance in the initial match, despite the commendable efforts of Aamer Jamal and Kurram Shahzad. Consistent pressure is crucial for securing wickets in Australia, but unfortunately, that was absent in their gameplay.

The team's only ray of hope lies in the availability of Abrar Ahmed for selection and the swift return to form of Shaheen Afridi. However, the absence of Khurram Shahzad in the second match poses another challenge, which needs to be addressed.

It has become a widely acknowledged fact that Pakistan's current bowling attack is perhaps their weakest ever to tour Australia. The MCG wicket can be quite placid at times, exacerbating the struggles faced by Pakistan's bowlers, as witnessed in Perth.

On a positive note, Pakistan possesses a batting lineup on paper that can put up a fight against Australia. Shaan Masood showcased his run-scoring abilities in the warm-up matches, Abdullah Shafique appears to be in exceptional form, and Babar Azam's potential is well-known.

However, concerns arise regarding their temperament in significant matches, particularly against Australia. The exclusion of Mohammad Rizwan, despite Sarfaraz Ahmed's proficiency in subcontinental conditions, raises eyebrows.

Pakistan is also relying on all-rounders like Faheem Ashraf and Agha Salman, indicating their insecurity regarding both batting and bowling options. To overcome these challenges, they must make bold choices and adopt an aggressive playing style.

Weather Report

There is some rain in Melbourne and we are likely to get a few interruptions first the first three days of the match.

Pitch Report

The curators at the MCG have made a genuine effort to breathe some like into the surface and we are hopeful that there will be bounce and spin on offer for the bowlers. Not too much pace for sure and the batter will also be able to score freely for the first few days.

Team News

No injuries to report of.
