Surrey
Right now, the second spot in the South Group belongs to Surrey (8-3), but Essex is incredibly close behind with also 14 points. Surrey’s season began a bit haphazardley, but the four straight wins really built some great momentum. The recent loss to Hampshire is nothing to be concerned about, as Hampshire could very well pick up two titles in a row.
Evans is one of the best batters in the league and is helping Surrey secure wins. His 396 runs have come primarily from two incredible consecutive games of 118* and 93, but you’d wish for a bit more consistency from him. Jacks is looking great with 372 runs, but both he and Evans were useless against Hampshire, which explains the loss. Abbott is a confusing batter to watch, as he’s had 110* this season but not much else.
Surrey’s bowling attack is formidable, but the duo making the most trouble is Narine (16/299) and Sam Curran (13/285). Curran was merely a respectable bowler for most of the season, but he went wild against Somerset with 5/26. His 0/16 versus Hampshire brought things back down again, but you’d hope to rely on him far more.

Middlesex
Being a solid batsman like Stephen Eskinazi, who is really having a decent season and ranks in the top 15 run-scorers with 310 runs, must be challenging. While he scored 1 and 0 in two awful matches in succession, he nevertheless recovered with an astounding 94*. Malan is offering some fine batting assistance with 206 runs, but there isn't much to get enthused about here.
Without any question, bowling is the area in which Middlesex really struggles, since their rival doesn't feel intimidated enough. Middlesex is simply being too poor on the bowling side, as they're simply conceding too many runs without taking sufficient wickets. Hollman is the top bowler, which is saying a lot considering his 7/280 numbers. Helm, who comes in second with 8/403 (ER of 10.46), rounds out the list of average Middlesex bowlers.
