SL vs ZIM Team Previews

Sri Lanka

Just like in the ODIs, the Sri Lankan team hasn’t been in the best of forms when it comes to the T20 format and has lost 6 of the last 8 T20Is. Nevertheless, the team has started off the New Year on a positive note by winning the ODI series and will look to continue with the same momentum.

Sri Lanka has made quite a few changes to the squad that featured in the ODI as it starts the preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup scheduled to be held later this year. The biggest change is the inclusion of all-rounder Angelo Mathews, who makes a comeback to the T20 squad after a gap of almost 3 years.

Other notable inclusions in the squad are Dhananjaya De Silva, Kamindu Mendis, and Kusal Perera, who will strengthen the batting. Pramod Madushan, Dunith Wellalage, and Jeffrey Vandersay miss out on the bowling lineup and will be replaced by Nuwan Thushara and Akila Dananjaya.

Wanindu Hasaranga, who made a brilliant comeback in the 3rd ODI after an injury, is set to play his first full T20 series as a captain, while Dasun Shanaka finds a place in the squad as a player.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe hasn’t been in the best of forms, especially in the T20 format. The team finished 3rd in the Africa regional qualifiers and failed to make the cut for the World Cup. Nevertheless, they still have some quality players and would like to make a positive start to the series.

Sikandar Raza takes over as the captain of the T20 squad. He will also be the key player for the team given his all-round abilities. Craig Ervine retains his spot as a batsman and will be expected to play a big inning in this match. Joining him in the batting line-up will be Milton Shumba and Tinashe Kamunhukamwe.

All-rounder Brian Bennett joins the squad along with bowlers Carl Mumba and Ainsley Ndlovu. They will join the likes of Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani, and Wellington Masakadza in the bowling department.

While Zimbabwe has some talented individuals, they need to perform well as a unit if they want to upset the hosts.

The pitch at Colombo is one of the more difficult pitches to bat on. The seamers will get some movement when the ball is new, while the spinners can expect assistance throughout the game. A score of around 145-150 can be considered a par score on this ground.

The weather is expected to be warm and humid with temperatures of close to 30 degrees Celsius.
