NZ vs SL Match Prediction - Mar 28, 2023

Tournament: Sri Lanka tour New Zealand, 2023.

Date: March 28, 2023.

Format: One day

Venue: Hagley Oval, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Time: 01:00

The visiting Sri Lankan team will be facing the New Zealand side in the 2nd one-day international to try and stay alive in the series later tomorrow. Sri Lanka had to endure a 2-0 whitewash in the test series and their form slipped further when they were bowled out for a paltry total of 76 runs in the first one-day game. The Sri Lankan bowling attack did a reasonable job in the match bowling good spells to restrict the hosts to a score of 275 runs. This is not too big a target in Auckland where most teams have succeeded in chasing down even larger scores.

Tom Latham is leading the New Zealand charge in the one-day series. The last time he played in a one-day game in Christchurch he scored a hundred. There are many newcomers to the New Zealand team as well. One of them is Henry Shipley. He made a name for himself with a five-wicket haul in his 4th game of the career. Some experienced campaigners such as Southee and Boult are not a part of this New Zealand team. The kiwis have some promising young batsmen on the side and they are expected to deliver the goods in Christchurch in this game.

NZ vs SL Team Previews

New Zealand

The New Zealand team has made a terrific start to the one-day international series with a thumping win in the first game. Immediately after providing a whitewash in the test series, the hosts New Zealand completely outplayed Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the series. In reality, they fielded a new-look side for the first game. With most of their senior players being rested for this match, it was expected that New Zealand might struggle to beat the Lankan lions. But this new-look side still managed to get an upper hand in the contest thanks to a wonderful bowling effort.

Chad Bowes made a debut for New Zealand in the one-day games and opened the inning together with Finn Allen. It did not turn out to be a memorable debut for Bowes as he was dismissed for 14 runs from 15 balls. The New Zealand skipper for this series, Tom Latham also struggled to get going. However, he was part of a 39-run stand for the 4th wicket. He scored just 5 runs from 17 balls though. But he remains a key player for the kiwis in their middle order. The top-order batting for New Zealand will be in the hands of the likes of Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, and Finn Allen.

These batters playing near the top of the order will be looking to provide a good start to the New Zealand inning. Rachin Ravindra played well in the lower middle order for the kiwis. He missed a good fifty on his debut for New Zealand by a wafer-thin margin of one run. This New Zealand outfit despite consisting of several young players has plenty of match-winners in their ranks, especially in the batting department. The new generation of New Zealand bowlers has not been as potent as their predecessors. But this win must have given them a lot of confidence. The key bowlers for New Zealand in this game will be Matt Henry, Blair Tickner, and Henry Shipley.

Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka will be quite angry with his team members for their performance in the first ODI in Auckland. This venue is famous for the successful run chases achieved during the history of cricket at the venue. The captain himself got out for zero as the entire team got bowled out for 76 runs. Their bowlers did a decent job with Lahiru Kumara and Chamika Karunaratne finishing their spells with economy rates of less than 5 runs per over. Kasun Rajitha picked up a couple of victims while bowling at an economy rate of just more than 5.

What will worry the Sri Lankan side a lot is the performance of their batters. They will be hoping for a total turnaround in their batting display for this game. This turnaround will have to begin with Pathum Nissanka right at the top of the order followed by Kusal Mendis batting in the number 3 position. These two batters are key to a comeback from the Sri Lankan side. Mendis will be expected to play a huge inning for the Sri Lankan team to reach a competitive total. The Hagley Oval ground is yet another venue where the New Zealand team has a good record of chasing down totals.

So, if they bat first in this game, Sri Lanka will need to post a total above 275 runs on the board. Some experienced batters such as Angelo Matthews will need to bring their experience to the forefront. They will be looking to build some useful partnerships together with Dasun Shanaka and Chamika Karunaratne. The all-rounders playing in the Sri Lankan squad will have to contribute to the success of the team. Some good ones are playing in the side such as the skipper Dasun Shanaka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Chamika Karunaratne, etc.

NZ vs SL Toss Prediction

If you check the statistics for this venue, you will find that the team batting first has won as many as 12 out of the 24 games played here. So, it means there is no clear advantage for the side batting or fielding first in this venue. The highest successful run chase recorded at this venue is 275 runs. This leads to the conclusion that it might be easier to defend a good score on this ground so, the skipper winning the toss will be inclined to batting first.

Pitch and Conditions

The Hagley Oval ground in Christchurch, New Zealand will be the venue for this match. This ground has hosted as many as 24 one-day games thus far. The average first innings total at the venue is 248 runs. A score in the region of 265 to 275 runs will be a competitive score on this venue.

This is a good track for batting. The surface offers an even bounce and good carry. But there is also a possibility that the curator will leave a bit of grass cover on the track. Faster bowlers may get some movement from the track as a result. There is also the weather forecast for rain coming down during the game and we can expect temperatures in the region of 15 degrees during the game.

NZ vs SL Betting Tips

In the series-opening game played at Eden Park, New Zealand managed to outplay Sri Lanka in all aspects of the game. New Zealand will have this momentum on their side going into this match. They are certain to have an edge over Sri Lanka in this game as well. But Sri Lanka also has a good all-round team and can bounce back if some key players come good during the match. All-in-all the home team will have the advantage in this game. We will bet with New Zealand to win this match and the series.
