NZ vs PAK Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Jan 19, 2024

New Zealand has taken a 3-0 lead in the T20 series against Pakistan and looks firmly on top of things. Pakistan made a number of changes in its previous match and may be forced to make more as it searches for a way to turn small periods of competence into a win. The bookmakers are firmly favoring New Zealand to win, as can be expected.

New Zealand vs Pakistan T20 Record

New Zealand has won 11 out of the 17 T20 matches it has played against Pakistan at home. It has also won the previous five completed T20 matches it has played against Pakistan overall. That is a serious run of dominance in a format where consistency can be hard to achieve.

NZ vs PAK Team Previews

New Zealand

New Zealand welcomed back Lockie Ferguson and strengthened its bowling attack. What we are seeing now is almost the first-choice team for New Zealand and very similar to what we can see in the T20 World Cup later this year. The batting has been led by Finn Allen, who smashed 16 sixes in his inning in the previous match, and valuable contributions from others.

Devon Conway is perhaps one of the few batters that will be short of confidence after having missed out in all the matches. Daryl Mitchell, Tim Seifert, and Glenn Phillips are all in good form and look very comfortable taking on the Pakistani attack.

The New Zealand batting depth has not really been tested so far but with Tim Southee at number 10, there is a lot of cushion to recover from early wickets.

New Zealand's bowling has been very crafty led by Tim Southee. He has taken the pace off the ball with the use of cutters and is able to plant doubt in the batters' minds. Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Mitch Santner, and Ish Sodhi form a world-class bowling lineup with Glenn Phillips to chip in as needed.

Pakistan

Pakistan skipper Shaheen Afridi was short of explanations after losing the third consecutive match of the series. The team has tried new tactics, brought in new players, and made wholesale changes to the bowling unit in the previous match but nothing worked.

The only player that has fought back is Babar Azam, often vilified as the root of all problems. His consistency at number three and the intent with which he is playing is remarkable and deserves better from the Pakistani public.

Will Pakistan panic and make changes to its batting order for this match? We think they might be tempted to bring in Sahibzada Farhan or Haseebullah Khan for this match. Shaheen Afridi has also not impressed with his strategies either and his struggles with the ball only add to Pakistan's problems.

Wasim Jr and Zaman Khan were quite impressive in the previous match while Haris Rauf continues to be extremely expensive. Mohammad Nawaz as a frontline spinner is also extremely limited. So should you count out Pakistan completely?

Absolutely not. In fact, as cliched as it may sound, they are as dangerous as ever but for the time being, we cannot advise betting on them.

NZ vs PAK Toss Prediction

The team that wins the toss is going to want to field first. Interestingly, the previous two T20 matches at the Hagley Oval have also featured Pakistan, both of which it won while chasing.

Pitch and Conditions

The conditions in Christchurch are expected to be overcast but no rain is forecast. The pitch is generally good for batting and we can expect another run-fest in this match. Something around 200 should be on the cards once more, especially if New Zealand bats first.

Both Mohamamd Rizwan and Babar Azam have fond memories of this venue with scores of 78 and 79 not out in winning causes.

NZ vs PAK Betting Tips

The cricketing play is to back New Zealand to win but the smart betting play might be to hedge your bets with in-play bets. The odds available on New Zealand to win are not very attractive but Pakistan has done little to deserve better from the bookmakers so far.

We suggest betting on New Zealand to win (limit your bet amounts) and then hedging when you get the opportunity.

Both teams have been peppering the boundaries and with the slightly larger ground, Hagley Oval will see a higher number of fours. We like Over 27.5 for this match.
