MLSW vs SYTW Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Nov 04, 2023

It’s been a while since these teams played each other, as the last two matches ended in a No Result. The Thunder won the previous match but that was back in 2021, and the squads have changed considerably since then. The Stars are coming off a loss to the Hurricanes, while the Thunder are celebrating a victory over the Renegades.

Melbourne Stars Women vs. Sydney Thunder Women will be played at the Casey Fields No 4, Melbourne, on November 4th. The OCB homepage has all the latest info for tips and results regarding major cricket matches.

MLSW vs SYTW Team Previews

Melbourne Stars Women

The Stars really need to pick things up if they want a chance of reaching the playoffs, as right now they’re 2-4 and desperately need a winning streak.

For the batting, opener Reid has only played 2 games but put up 25 runs, but we’re more concerned about Bouchier (92) and Dunkley (50), who simply aren’t giving the team much batting effort. Sutherland (110) and Capsey (126) are doing fine enough, but the team is relying heavily on Lanning (154) to help steady the ship. Even Lanning had looked a bit iffy in the last few games (only 24 runs in four matches), but brought things back with a great 75 runs in a recent loss.

We’re still not sure why Moloney has bowled 18 overs, as she’s been awful with 1/151 (8.38ER) and just hurting the Stars’ chances in every game. Garth’s bowling isn’t much better with 4/138, but there have been good performances from the likes of Day 9/163 and Sutherland 11/165 (7.61 ER)

Sydney Thunder Women

After finishing last on the table in 2022 with an abysmal 1-10 record, who’d have thought that the Thunder could turn things around? Sydney has never looked better and is performing well with a 3-1 record this season. They are yet to play the Heat, Scorchers, or Strikers, so let’s see how they fare against a tougher team.

It’s clear that Athapaththu is the team’s best player with 177 runs so far (average of 44.25), and apart from one game of 13 runs, she’s batted extremely well and is a reliable scorer. Litchfield isn’t far behind with 167 runs and Wilson is a useful opener with 105 runs. Knight hadn’t scored much in her first 3 games (just 33 runs), but she came alive in the last match with a much-needed 52*.

For the bowling, it’s actually nowhere near the level of batting, and the Thunder really need to improve this area. Darlington is the leading wicket-taker with 5, but most of those came in her 4/33 effort against the Renegades (she’s also giving up too many runs at 132). Bates has been terrible after 14 overs with 1/113 (8.07 ER), but Kapp (4/80) and Athapaththu (4/98) have been steadily good.

MLSW vs SYTW Toss Prediction

The captain winning the toss would want to bowl first, as 5 out of 6 games in the WBBL have been won this way.

Pitch and Conditions

There haven’t been so many games played at the Casey Fields No. 4 pitch, but it certainly appears to favour bowling in the first innings, with a lot of movement and pace for fast bowlers, as well as turn for spinners. Imagine a low-scoring game of around 115 in the first innings.

MLSW vs SYTW Betting Tips

The Parimatch odds are certainly more enticing for the Stars, but we’re trusting the Thunder far more at the moment. The likes of Athapaththu and Litchfield are just batting incredibly well and can’t be stopped. Plus, the Thunder are finally getting solid contributions from Knight and Wilson.

The Stars have talent with Sutherland and Lanning, but even Lanning has been quite unpredictable and only had a few decent games. The Stars’ bowling attack isn’t very threatening, and Athapaththu and Litchfield will punish Moloney.

The Thunder also need to improve their bowling and perhaps less overs from Darlington and Bates, but we’ve seen good matches with the ball from Athapaththu and Kapp. If Sydney picks up the bowling, then Melbourne has little chance.

Bet on the Sydney Thunder to win.

Athapaththu and Wilson is a steady opening pair and typically score a lot together (99 so far). Athapaththu is hard to dismiss and we hope that Wilson is improving as the season goes along.

You won't get much more money if you bet on Litchfield or Knight, so it makes sense to keep with Athapaththu right now. She's only had one bad game and has a total of 177 runs (average of 44.25), so we trust her to continue this momentum.

Sydney Thunder Best Bowler: Marizanne Kapp

The odds are decent here and Kapp has the ability to be the best bowler on a great pitch. She's already got 4/80 so far and has the talent to get at least 3 wickets against a shaky Stars batting squad.
