MLRW vs BHW Team Previews

Melbourne Renegades Women

The Melbourne Renegades didn’t have the best of times in the last season, winning just 4 of the 14 matches they played. As a result, the team finished 7th on the points table and failed to make it through to the knockouts.

Despite the poor performance, the Renegades have kept most of its squad unchanged and have shown faith in its existing line-up. The two new players brought in, Tammy Beaumont and Jess Duffin, have played for the team in the past and that will help them blend seamlessly with the others.

They picked up Hayley Matthews and Harmanpreet Kaur during the draft and the duo brings in a wealth of experience. The Renegades struggled to put up big totals in the last season and will need to bat well if they want to make a winning start.

Courtney Webb and Josephine Dooley will play an important role for them in the middle order. The team has received a big blow before the start of the season as two of its key bowlers, Tayla Vlaeminck and Sophie Molineux have been ruled out of the entire season due to injuries.

The team has brought in Georgia Wareham as a replacement. She last featured in season 7 and is a genuine wicket-taker.

Brisbane Heat Women

The Brisbane Heat made it as far as the Challenger round in the last season but were knocked out by the eventual champions, the Adelaide Strikers, in an engaging contest. The Heat have finished in the top-4 in each of the last 5 seasons and will hope to continue with that record.

While the team has managed to retain much of its core talent, they have made some valuable additions to the squad during the draft. Amelia Kerr, who has been a key player for the team, has been retained. However, she is unlikely to be available for the first few matches.

She is likely to be replaced by Sarah Glenn. Bess Heath, who was earlier with the Stars, has been brought in. However, the biggest addition to the squad is Mignon du Preez. She has plenty of experience in the Big Bash and will add strength to an already rich batting line-up.

Courtney Grace will likely lead the attack with the new ball alongside Lucy Hamilton and Nicola Hancock. Skipper Jess Jonassen will feature in the spin department along with Grace Harris and Sarah Glenn.

Pitch and Conditions

The Junction Oval generally offers a good batting surface. The bounce is consistent and there is a good amount of pace on offer. The quicker bowlers might get some movement early on in the game. A score of around 150 is a par score. There are likely to be some crowds in the sky but there is little chance of rain. The temperature will remain pleasant.
