Joburg Super Kings

The Super Kings lost three consecutive matches - to MI Cape Town, Durban's Super Giants and Paarl Royals - before beating the Pretoria Capitals. Now they have the chance to avenge the defeat they suffered to the Royals a week ago. We're in for an intriguing fixture.

Joburg have a lot going for them in the bowling department. Seamer Lizaad Williams is among the leading wicket-takers overall this SA season with nine in four innings, while leg-spinner Imran Tahir's miserly economy rate of 6.46 is right up there among the best as well.

Williams and left-armer Nandre Burger must continue to lead the bowling attack in the absence of Proteas star Gerald Coetzee. He injured himself prior to South Africa's second Test against India earlier this month and has not played since. Perhaps he will return for this match.

Leus du Plooy remains their top run-scorer this SA20 season with 153 in four innings. He is averaging almost 40 and striking at 160-plus. Those are impressive numbers, but they need support. No other Joburg batter has come close to matching du Plooy. England recruit Mooen Ali is the closest with 90 runs in four innings.

Paarl Royals

The Paarl Royals are doing most things right to prove they are genuine title contenders. They want to dethrone current champoins Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Paarl won three matches in row at the start of this SA20 season before losing to MI Cape Town, but quickly bounced back against the same opposition a few days later.

When Paarl beat Joburg earlier in the 2024 SA20, Jos Buttler starred with the bat and Lungi Ngidi with the ball. Both should be key in this match as well. Ngidi is the leading wicket-taker overall in this season's SA20, while Buttler has been consistently solid at the top of the order.

Alongside Buttler, England team-mate Jason Roy has been going big as well. Roy should be full of confidence after hitting a match-winning 68 against Cape Town recently. Local talent-wise, Mitchell van Buuren and David Miller make for a solid combination in Paarl's middle order.

If Paarl win here, it'll be their fifth of the season. That's not quite enough to book a semi-final spot yet, but certainly close, subject to other results. But they're going to be hard pressed against a Joburg outfit motivated by their first win of the 2024 SA20 late last week.
