IND vs AFG Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Jan 11, 2024

India will take on Afghanistan in a short T20 series as both teams build up to the T20 World Cup. There is a lot of interest in this series as it marks the first time since the previous T20 World Cup that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are a part of the squad. The team selection and approach of the management is going to be very interesting to watch.

India vs Afghanistan T20 Head to Head

India dominates the rivalry against Afghanistan with four wins out of five matches. The one remaining match was a no-result and so India has never lost to Afghanistan in T20 cricket.

IND vs AFG Team Previews

India

India will not have Virat Kohli for selection for the first match and so some of the difficult selection issues will wait till the second match of the series. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal will open the inning, which also means that Shubman Gill may miss out on selection.

Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, and Jitesh Sharma are likely to be the other players in the lineup. There are enough left-handers in this lineup to give India flexibility as well as a number of players that can play attacking modern T20 cricket.

The four frontline bowlers will be Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, and Avesh Khan with Kuldeep Yadav as the spinner. That leaves only the all-rounder's place open which will go to Axar Patel. Shivam Dube is a proven spin-hitter but his bowling is not good enough for a number seven slot.

Dravid and Sharma may choose to make some surprise selection otherwise we don't think the playing eleven will deviate from what we have forecast. The strengths of this team are obvious. Strong batting at the top and a brilliant spinner in Kuldeep Yadav.

The weaknesses are also quite obvious. The fast bowling unit is quite raw and the batting unit lacks the kind of depth that other top teams boast of.

India Playing 11

Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Jitesh Sharma, Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar.

Afghanistan

Afghanistan will not have Rashid Khan available for selection in this match. However, even without him, the Afghanistan team is not one that is weak by any standard. In fact, we think it is just a matter of time before Afghanistan gets its first win against India in this format.

Their bowling attack has Noor Ahmed, Naveen ul Haq, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and Fareed Ahmad. They will also have Mohammad Nabi and maybe Azmatullah Omarzai in the playing eleven. This gives Afghanistan a lot of flexibility in selection and makes them very dangerous with the ball.

All of these bowlers are experienced in T20 cricket and we think the Afghan bowling attack is superior to the Indian one in this series. The problem for Afghanistan comes in the batting department. They are highly dependent on Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran for their runs.

There is a clear drop-off in quality once these two get out. Ikram Alikhil, Mohammad Nabi, and Najibullah Zadran are decent players but they cannot be relied upon to consistently set up matches. If Afghanistan can get enough runs on the board, its bowling attack should be able to do the job.

Afghanistan Playing 11

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Najibullah Zadran, Karim Janat, Gulbadin Naib, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Naveen ul Haq, Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

IND vs AFG Toss Prediction

The team that wins the toss is likely to want to field first. Four out of the six matches played in Mohali have been won by the team that has chased.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

There is no rain expected in Mohali on match day. The temperatures will be cold and there will be some dew around as it is still winter in the north of India. The pitch is generally good for batting but a bit slow in nature. The outfield is also quite large and allows the slow bowlers to come into play.

The average score batting first is 183 but we think it might be a bit lower in this match.

IND vs AFG Betting Tips

We know that India is the favorite heading into this match but Afghanistan should not be counted out. This is one of the matches where you want to start with betting on the underdog and then hedge as the rates change during the match. We think eventually India might end up the winner but that the match will be close.

Bet on India to win (if you are only betting outright).
