England Women

The English women slipped and slid to a win during the first T20I international played at Hove. Alice Capsey played a quick innings scoring a fifty and the debutant 6'3" fast bowler Mahika Gaur picked up a crucial wicket to take English women to a win. Even though the winning margin was just 12 runs, the D/L system was responsible for bringing the target down to 68 runs from 6 overs for Sri Lanka women. But the English women were in control all the way. Alice Capsey managed to equal her top score in T20 international games with a 51 from 27 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes.

The English women smashed the Sri Lankan attack to all parts of the ground and scored 186 runs from 17 overs for the loss of just 4 wickets. Danni Wyatt continued on her merry ways with another 48 from 30 balls while playing at the top of the order for England. That apart there were some cameos played by Heather Knight and Freya Kemp as the Lankan attack struggled in these conditions. England has decided to rest Sophia Dunkley for this series and yet they did not bring in Tammy Beaumont to open the innings for them despite a scintillating Hundred.

Maia Bouchier was asked to open the innings for the first time in her T20I career together with Danni Wyatt. the tone for the English innings was set by Wyatt who was also the leading run-getter in the Hundred. Although Wyatt fell before reaching a half-century, her work was continued by Alice Capsey. The 14th over of the English innings went for 22 runs and the next one cost 17 runs. Capsey hit a couple of boundaries to reach a 26-ball fifty. But she could not add much more as she was bowled by Chamari Athapaththu while attempting a reverse slog.

Sri Lanka Women

We received heavy rains during the day for the first T20I. The Sri Lankan skipper won the toss and decided to bowl first. The start of the match was delayed by an hour however, there was little help on offer for the bowlers despite these conditions. The first over bowled by Udeshika Prabodhani went for 12 runs and the English team rattled along with a scoring rate of over 10 runs per over. The Sri Lankan women were asked to chase a record score after the end of the England innings. But even that was not possible as rain interrupted once again.

Heavy showers meant the players had to leave the field after just 3.1 overs were bowled and the contestants were 11 runs short of the target. The D/L/S calculation left the Sri Lankans only with a glimpse of hope of reaching the target. But they still had their skipper Chamari Athapaththu at the crease. However, the 17-year-old debutant for England women Mahika Gaur had other ideas. She got rid of the international star and the Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Atapaththu when she edged a Gaur delivery to the wicketkeeper.

The requirement for reaching the target at this stage was 45 runs from 17 balls which proved to be a bit too much for the Sri Lankan batters. The presence of Chamari Athapaththu was their only hope. But when she fell for 15 it ended all the hopes harbored by Sri Lankan women of reaching the target. The best bowlers in the game for Sri Lankan women were Chamari Athapaththu and Kavisha Dilhari who picked up a wicket apiece. Both these bowlers bowled well and did a reasonable restriction job. Inoka Ranaweera also picked up a wicket but she was a tad expensive.
