BAN vs NZ Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Nov 28, 2023

Bangladesh and New Zealand will start a two-match series with the opener in Sylhet. Both teams switch to Test match mode after competing in the 2023 Cricket World Cup recently.

This is an opportunity for the Tigers and Black Caps to gain valuable points in the International Cricket Council's World Test championship. Let's see what the betting odds and cricket markets have in store for this match.

Bangladesh vs New Zealand head-to-head record

New Zealand have four victories to Bangladesh's one in their last five Test meetings. The Kiwis, however, have not won a Test match in Bangladesh since 2008.

BAN vs NZ Team Previews

Bangladesh

Bangladesh have named the uncapped Hasan Mahmud, Hasan Murad and Shahadat Hossain Dipu in their 15-man squad for this series. Najmul Hossain Shanto will captain the hosts in the absence of Litton Das. This is a relatively young and new-look Bangladesh Test squad.

The Tigers will also be without Taskin Ahmed and Shakib Al Hasan. Ahmed's absence will limit their pace bowling options, while Al Hasan's unavailability leaves the spin and batting resources short, too. Head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, though, has encouraged the rest to perform well without the first-choice stars around.

Fast bowling coach Allan Donald exited Bangladesh cricket recently. They will work with former West Indies fast bowler Corey Collymore. The arrival of former Warwickshire and Glamorgan batter David Hemp to Bangladesh's coaching staff should also help.

Bangladesh are not necessarily a powerhouse in Test cricket, but are certainly stronger at home than away. They can take a lot of confidence into this series, knowing they beat New Zealand in New Zealand - in this format of the international game - last year.

Bangladesh Playing 11

Najmul Hossain Shanto, Zakir Hasan, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan, Nurul Hasan, Taijul Islam, Shoriful Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Shahadat Hossain.

New Zealand

New Zealand have to put the disappointment of this month's Cricket World Cup semi-final exit behind them for now and settle into a change of format, in relatively similar conditions. Pitches in Bangladesh, indeed, should be relatively similar to some of the conditions experienced in India recently.

Like Bangladesh, this is New Zealand's first Test in the third cycle of the ongoing World Test Championship. They have not played this format of the game in eight months. It will be interesting to see how quickly - or slowly - they adapt in the wake of several limited-overs fixtures.

The Black Caps will be without Matt Henry. He is still injured and has been replaced in the squad by fellow fast bowler Neil Wagner, who has the ability to extract pace and bounce from dull decks. Wagner's inclusion also offers the New Zealanders a left-arm option without Trent Boult around.

Batting-wise, Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra make for a formidable trio going into this series. Ravindra and Mitchell were New Zealand's top run-scorers at the Cricket World Cup and can take that form into this series. Williamson, too, has been in solid form despite some injury concerns.

New Zealand Playing 11

Devon Conway, Tom Latham, Kane Williamson, Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell, Glenn Phillips, Kyle Jamieson, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ajaz Patel.

BAN vs NZ Toss Prediction

The Sylhet International Cricket Stadium hosted its first Test match in 2018, but nothing since. This will be the first Test at this ground in five years.

Teams generally prefer to bat first in Test cricket in Bangladesh. The assumption is often pitch conditions will generally deteriorate and batting in the fourth innings is particularly tricky.

The team to win the toss here will likely choose to bowl first - and perhaps take advantage of fourth-innings conditions with the ball.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

Winning the toss and opting to bat first can become all the more important if the pitch is flatter than anticipated. This gives the team batting first the option of posting an insurmountable total and bowling the opposition out twice.

It's well worth fielding two specialist spinners here - and having a third, or even fourth, option in the XI. There is little to no rain forecast in Sylhet for the five scheduled matchdays. Conditions should be dry, hot and humid.

BAN vs NZ Betting Tips

Both teams are hampered by the absence of first-choice players. Bangladesh, though, appear more limited than New Zealand.

Bangladesh have homeground advantage, though, which counts for plenty in this format. They should win the series opener.

Bangladesh are priced as 3.95 underdogs to win this match against 1.62 favourites New Zealand. Betting on the longer odds could bring good value. A draw is priced at 5.70.
