Australia was blown apart by New Zealand. Its famed bowling attack, arguably the best in the world, was put to the sword and ended up conceding at least thirty runs above par. The batting then went hard but kept losing wickets as well. Nothing went to plan.
There were a lot of experts who said that Australia was overrated as a T20 team and it won 2021 more due to circumstances than actually deserving to do so. We don't agree. Australia has put together a fearsome T20 lineup that has the batting depth to rival any team and a bowling attack that gets it right on most occasions.
There is a bit of dependence on David Warner at the top. It is not as if the others can't score but players like Finch, Maxwell, or even Mitchell Marsh have either not been scoring runs or have just not played consistently enough. One or two wickets could put the cat among the pigeons.
You would expect Australia's bowlers to dominate the Sri Lankans. Josh Hazelwood is the bowler that you can probably bank on but the lack of form from Mitchell Starc will be concerning. Maxwell and Zampa can also come under pressure from the Sri Lankans.

Sri Lanka lost its opening match to Namibia and is also facing a lot of injuries. A couple of its key players have been ruled out and the conditions in Perth are going to be challenging as well. Sri Lanka is certainly up against it and it is easy to see why the odds are so generous on it winning the match.
The biggest strength of Sri Lanka has to be its spinners. Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga are the two players that will challenge the Aussies. Perth is not a surface where they will get a lot of assistance but just their subtle variations can put players like Finch and Marsh in trouble.
The pace bowling options are poor and can be attacked. You have to assume that Australia will have one eye on the net run rate and will attempt to put pressure on the medium pacers. Sri Lanka's batting was without Pathum Nissanka in the previous match. It is unclear if he will be available but his absence is a massive blow.
No one has scored more runs for Sri Lanka than Nissanka in the previous 12 months. Kusal Mendia, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Dashun Shanaka are some of the players to watch out for. Sri Lanka has done quite well against Australia in T20 cricket even while playing in Australia.
If it has to have a chance in this match, the batting will have to be brilliant.

Pitch and Conditions
The conditions in Perth are forecast to be clear on match day. There are unlikely to be any rain interruptions. The pitch is going to be fast and bouncy. We saw the match between England and Afghanistan on this surface be a high-octane affair where plenty of wickets fell but run scoring was not easy. Even the spinners made life tough for the English batters and pacers from both teams prospered.
We think something around 160-170 should be seen as par.
