The blistering left-handed opening batter should be a surefire bet at St George’s Park. In his previous match against MI Cape Town, the youngster hit a game-changing 83 runs off 52 balls in Paarl.
This should be a likely outcome as the pitch has taken some wear and tear from a month-long tournament. Boundary hitting may be more difficult than it initially was. Paarl Royals managed ten boundary fours when they met MI Cape Town at Newlands.
These two teams have been among the best performers this season. Both have really strong home records in 2025 too. This game offers a different dynamic of this knockout game being played at a neutral venue, so arguably the better side should come out on top. Both teams will fight their case, but MI Cape Town may be just too good.
The past two years of matches between MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals have things even stevens. Each team has beaten the other this season. In the past five games between them, MI Cape Town have three wins and Paarl Royals have two wins.
MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals do battle in Qualifier one for the rights to go directly into the SA20 Final for 2025. The match will be played at St George’s Park, Gqeberha on Tuesday, 4 February 2025. Catch this first SA20 knockout game in India via the Star Sports 2 Network and the Disney+ Hotstar app.
Afghan opening batter Sediqullah Atal brings explosive power in the first six overs. He showed his full potential with 74 runs off 46 balls against Pretoria Capitals recently. Young talent Connor Esterhuizen is another opening batter looking to put the bowlers under early pressure with the fielding restrictions in play. The local batter hit 69 runs off 43 balls in front of his home crowd in Cape Town in the team’s previous match.
Skipper Colin Ingram is a seasoned campaigner, having played in the world’s biggest T20 leagues. The team will tap into his wealth of experience in the field and with the bat.
All-rounder Delano Potgieter contributes with both bat and ball as a handy contributor in either department when called upon. Potgieter has more than 1000 runs and almost 50 wickets in T20s.
Wicketkeeper-batter Chris Benjamin is a reliable gloveman who can accelerate in the middle overs and deep into the innings. Left-arm all-rounder George Linde is a game-changer with his power hitting and spin bowling. He took two wickets in his previous match. The dynamic all-rounder will be MI Cape Town’s secret weapon.
Dewald Brevis’ fearless batting approach will undoubtedly take this game by storm. He has over 1700 T20 runs.
On the bowling front, Thomas Kaber and Tristan Luus bring variety with their spin and medium-pace respectively. England's Matthew Potts adds pace, aggression and awkward bounce to the seam attack.
Veteran off-spinner Dane Piedt rounds off the attack with experience and control. The spinners of Kaber and Piedt were the chief destroyers against the Capitals with three wickets each.
Wicketkeeper-batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius will be key in providing a strong start alongside new import Mitchell Owen. Australian Owen hit 108 runs off 42 balls in the 2024/25 Big Bash League Final to seal the title for the Hobart Hurricanes.
Rubin Hermann and Mitchell van Buuren are both known for their aggressive stroke play. They seem to have found a permanent spot in the team. Left-hander Hermann scored 35 runs in his previous SA20 innings.
Dewan Marais is another young talent looking to impress after a recent introduction into the playing lineup. Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunith Wellalage provides valuable spin and lower-order firepower. The young spinner has over 50 T20 wickets.
The Royals boast a formidable bowling attack with a combination of pace and spin from varying angles. Captain Bjorn Fortuin is a skiddy left-arm spinner who will be crucial in controlling the run rate with economical bowling while taking wickets. He is joined by Afghan spin sensation Mujeeb Ur Rahman with his clever use of flight, drift and variations. 23-year-old Mujeeb Ur Rahman has 275 T20 wickets.
The pace battery features experienced Proteas campaigners Lungi Ngidi and Andile Phehlukwayo. Young Sri Lankan talent Eshan Malinga adds an extra bit of international flavour with his right-arm pace bowling. Both Fortuin and Malinga were in the wickets column against Sunrisers Eastern Cape with two wickets each.
The toss may be vital as both teams try to get the better of the day/night conditions. Paarl Royals won the previous clash against MI Cape Town by chasing 159 with six wickets in the bank. Both captains should want to chase.
Both teams may be somewhat familiar with the type of pitch that St George’s Park could produce. The pitch may be slower and lower bouncing than most around the country, but should not be too far from what MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals face at home. The seamers could get some early movement with the new ball, but with not much cloud coverage around that may wear off quickly.
The batters could be looking to feast on scoring opportunities in the back half of the batting innings. MI Cape Town scored 174 for seven in 20 overs at Gqeberha in the tournament opener.
Gqeberha will be warm and extremely humid on matchday. The skies will be clear throughout the day. Despite a five percent chance of rain, wet weather should not be an issue.
You can expect a fiercely competitive game in Qualifier one. Both teams are looking to make their lives easier by qualifying directly for the 2025 SA20 Final with a win in this match. Both teams have tasted victory against the other this season. MI Cape Town could be marginal favourites from their slightly better head-to-head record and their top players in excellent form.
Bet on MI Cape Town to win this match.
