The PSL was set up by the Pakistan Cricket Board back in 2015. Unlike some other leading domestic T20 competitions, in the PSL all of the franchises that compete in the event are owned and controlled by the tournament's team of investors.
HBL Pakistan, a famous bank, has long acted as the primary sponsor of the PSL.
The PSL uses a similar format to many of the planet's most popular T20 leagues. There is a double round-robin format where each of the PSL teams will play each other twice. The top four in the PSL standings then go on to the play-off stage, which works the same as the IPL.
The PSL has a draft system whereby teams can build their rosters for the upcoming season.
PSL teams are normally allowed to retain up to eight of their players from last season going into the draft, with a supplementary and replacement player draft then held to finalise the squads.
Super overs are used in the PSL to decide the match winner in the event that there is a tie.
For the opening season of the PSL, the competition consisted of five teams, which were:
Shortly after the PSL ended in 2017, it was confirmed that a sixth team would be added. Multan Sultans - which was owned by Schön Properties - subsequently joined the competition for 2018.
Islamabad United won the 2024 edition of the PSL, collecting their third title so far. They are the tournament's most successful team, with Lahore Qalandars having been champions twice.
The PSL normally runs for about a month, starting in the middle of February. This means that it slots into the cricket calendar just in time for the start of the IPL season each March.
In 2024, the PSL final was played on 18 March with Martin Guptill's 50 helping the 2016 and 2018 winners Islamabad United to edge home against Multan Sultans by two wickets.
