While Rawalpindi offers a good batting surface, the batting from both sides hasn’t been consistent. Also, the conditions here on matchday may make it difficult for the batsmen to go after the bowlers.
Imam ul Haq hasn’t been in the best of forms over the last few months. He has crossed the 25-run mark just twice in his last 8 innings. We reckon that his poor run will continue in this match as well.
Pakistan will take on Bangladesh in a dead rubber on Thursday as both teams search for their first win of the tournament. The match will be played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
The two teams have faced each other in 39 matches to date. Pakistan has won 34 games while Bangladesh won 5.
This match can be watched live on the JioHotstar App and Star Sports Network.
Pakistan will be disappointed with the way they have performed in this series, especially given the fact that they are the hosts and have an advantage over other teams. They have lost both matches and have already been eliminated from the tournament.
The faults that cost them the match against New Zealand were exposed yet again as Pakistan was unable to rectify them. The batsmen, particularly at the top of the order, have lacked intent and have faced too many dot balls to put themselves under pressure.
Babar Azam has looked rusty in his batting at the top of the order and that has put the middle order under stress. Imam ul Haq, who came in for Fakhar Zaman in the last match, couldn’t latch on to the opportunity and continues to struggle against the new ball. Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel have played better but their batting has been excruciatingly slow.
The seam bowling, which has been one of Pakistan’s biggest strengths in the past, has been unable to yield the desired results. The trio of Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf have shown flashes of brilliance but are rather inconsistent.
The home team also appears to be short of one specialist spinner in this tournament.
Bangladesh has often been the surprise package of any tournament and has in the past upset the calculations of even the most seasoned teams. However, this year, they haven’t been able to play with the same intensity and are eliminated from the race to the knockouts.
The absence of some of their most experienced players means that Bangladesh has failed to perform under pressure situations. Just like their opponents, Bangladesh’s top order has struggled to deliver and that has led to a cascading effect on the middle order.
Najmul Hossain Shanto and Tanzid Hasan will open the batting for them and look to give a good start. The big names including Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmudullah have failed to deliver with the bat.
Jaker Ali has been the most consistent performer for the team, scoring 49+ runs in both his outings.
The bowling has been pretty average as well. Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed have picked two wickets each in two matches. They will be expected to bowl better with the new ball. Rishad Hossain is the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets against his name.
6 of the last 10 matches played here have been won while batting second while 1 was a tie. In each of the last 3 ODIs played here, the team winning the toss has opted to field first and we expect that trend to continue.
The Rawalpindi stadium is a high-scoring venue and has an average first-inning score of around 275 in the last 5 matches played here.
The surface is flat and hard, and the ball comes onto the bat. While the new ball does seam a bit, there is no alarming movement and the batsmen will be able to play the big shots once they get their eye in. The spinners can expect some help as the cracks widen but overall, it will remain a good batting track.
The weather is expected to remain overcast and we may see some rain throughout the day, causing interruptions or even a shortened match.
We are backing Pakistan to win the match. While not in the best of forms, they remain the stronger team, at least one paper and we expect them to play better cricket. The surfaces in Pakistan have been better for batting than in Dubai. That is where we think Pakistan will gain an advantage because Bangladesh's batting lineup is perhaps the worst in the entire Champions trophy.
Bet on Pakistan to win.
