New Zealand knocked off 27 boundary fours against Pakistan. Bangladesh managed 16 boundary fours against Asian rivals India. It should come as no surprise if New Zealand are the team with the most fours in the match.
The Bangladeshi opening batters may have a quiet over to start things off. They only managed one run and the loss of a wicket in their first over against India. The New Zealand seamers are brilliant exponents of swing bowling with the new ball too.
The teams faced contrasting fortunes in their first matches of the tournament. The team from New Zealand have momentum behind them after beating the host nation. They have been a powerful force in ODIs recently. Bangladesh will have hopes of causing trouble as one of the teams from the subcontinent. They may find the strength of Mitchell Santner’s side to be too much for them.
New Zealand have run rampant against the Bangladeshi team in the last five ODIs. In those previous five ODIs against Bangladesh, the team from the Trans-Tasman have won four out of five. Bangladesh have won once. That being the most recent game between them and New Zealand.
Bangladesh and New Zealand meet for the sixth match of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Monday, 24 February 2025. Catch all the action in India on either of the Star Sports Network or the Disney+ Hotstar app.
Leading the team is captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. The left-handed opening batter is a composed customer. The innings will start with Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar as a mix of youth and experience. Hasan has three half-centuries at ODI level.
The middle order is fortified by the dependable Towhid Hridoy. He recently showcased resilience with a century against India. The versatile Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributes significantly as an all-rounder. He has both 1604 ODI runs and 110 ODI wickets.
Veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim adds depth to a batting lineup which can compete at the highest level if their batting finds its rhythm. Jaker Ali is another potential wicketkeeper-batter. Besides his role as a backup wicketkeeper, his batting skills with brute power and touch will be heavily needed for the team to do well at the back end. He hit a half-century against India.
The bowling attack is spearheaded by the formidable pace of Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman and Tanzim Hasan Sakib. Right-arm pacer Ahmed has 110 ODI wickets with best bowling figures of five for 28. Left-armer Rahman has an incredible six four-wicket hauls and five five-wicket hauls in ODIs.
The pacers will use their unique skills against New Zealand. The rest of the lineup can feed off their energy. Adding a strategic spin dimension is Rishad Hossain. His leg-spin can be pivotal in breaking partnerships. He grabbed a double against India.
Will Young is a dependable right-handed batter. Young has consistently provided stability at the top order. He showed that consistency with a hundred to start his Champions Trophy tournament. Devon Conway’s adaptability across formats makes him a linchpin in New Zealand's batting arsenal. The left-hander has more than 1400 ODI runs.
Kane Williamson returns revitalised. The former captain brings a wealth of experience and a calm demeanour to lead the middle order with his impeccable technique. Daryl Mitchell is versatile. He is one of the better pairs of hands in the field. As a batter, he will have the experience behind him to dictate the tempo of a one-day game. He has six ODI centuries and seven ODI half-centuries.
Tom Latham is a highly dependable wicketkeeper-batter both behind the stumps and when wielding the bat to constantly keep the scoreboard moving. He guided the side over the line against Pakistan with 118 runs not out.
Glenn Phillips is a dynamic all-round player. Phillips' explosive batting and sharp fielding make him a formidable presence in the shorter formats. That explosiveness was on show against Pakistan with 61 runs off 39 balls. Michael Bracewell, with his left-handed batting and right-arm off-spin, provides flexibility to both the batting and bowling departments.
Since arriving in Pakistan, he has taken six wickets in five ODIs. Mitchell Santner is leading the side. Santner's left-arm orthodox spin and strategic acumen will be pivotal on subcontinental pitches. He took three wickets against Pakistan.
Nathan Smith is an emerging all-rounder. Smith's right-arm medium-fast bowling and lower-order batting have earned him a national spot which has become permanent. Matt Henry is a seasoned campaigner with the swinging new ball. Henry's right-arm fast-medium bowling brings experience and consistency to the pace attack. In ODIs, he has 12 four-wicket hauls and two five-wicket hauls.
At 23, William O'Rourke's right-arm fast bowling and impressive domestic performances have fast-tracked his inclusion to the national team. He has had numerous successful performances in the black and white of New Zealand, including a three-fer in his previous game.
Both captains could be comfortable chasing. In the last five ODI matches between them, the side chasing has won on four occasions.
The Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium pitch may slightly favour spin bowlers. The drier conditions of the subcontinent mean that the batters should enjoy the hard surface for most of the innings. The fast bowlers will need to make full use of the new ball before conditions get tougher for seam bowling. New Zealand scored 320 for five in 50 overs in their first match of the tournament.
The temperatures on matchday will be moderately warm, but humid. Conditions are likely to be mostly cloudy with a ten percent chance of rain.
There should be very little doubt about who the favourites are for this one. New Zealand have won four ODIs on the bounce. Bangladesh has struggled after five ODI losses in a row. The Black Caps will be looking to continue their early confidence in the tournament. The odds are not the greatest but we don't think there is any justification to go for the underdog here.
Bet on New Zealand to win this match.
