The pitch at Lahore is excellent to bat on and the boundaries here aren’t the longest. As both teams have some big strikers of the ball, we are expecting to see a couple of big overs.
Ben Duckett played an excellent knock in the last match. He has been in good form and has scored at least 32 runs in each of his last 6 innings, which include 2 centuries and two half-centuries. We reckon he will play a good innings here as well.
Both, Afghanistan and England, will be fighting for survival in the ongoing Champions Trophy as they face off in a crucial Group B encounter on Wednesday. The match will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
The two teams have faced each other in 3 games so far. England has won twice while Afghanistan has won once.
This match can be watched live on the JioHotstar App and Star Sports Network.
Afghanistan has enjoyed a dream run in the ODIs over the past few months and came into this tournament with plenty of confidence. However, they didn’t get the start they would have hoped for as the team suffered a massive loss against South Africa.
With only two more matches to go, Afghanistan will have to win here if they want to keep their qualification chances alive. Much will depend on the opening pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. They have been pretty consistent as a pair for their team and have the ability to play the big shots during the Powerplay.
In the middle order, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, and Mohammad Nabi bring in plenty of experience, while all-rounders Azmatullah Omarzai and Gulbadin Naib are both capable of taking on the bowlers during the death overs.
Even Rashid Khan, who comes in at number 9, can play some lofty shots and there is no dearth of batting depth in Afghanistan’s batting. The spin attack, led by Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad could be the key for Afghanistan. The seam department is well-rounded too, but often tends to leak runs.
England’s poor run in the white-ball format continues as it lost its opening fixture against arch-rivals Australia on Saturday. If they lose this match as well, England could be looking at a potential eviction from the tournament.
Barring Ben Duckett, the batting from England was very average, to say the least. Duckett was extraordinary in his strokeplay and timing as he slammed 165 runs from just 143 deliveries. While he received decent support from Joe Root, the other batsmen failed to get going despite batting on a flat track.
The team will expect a better performance from skipper Jos Buttler, Harry Potter, Phil Salt, and Jamie Smith. The bowling has been below par as well. Despite having a mammoth target to defend, the English bowlers, particularly the seamers, were very expensive.
Only Adil Rashid was able to make an impact and picked up a wicket as well. He remains the key bowler for England.
6 of the last 10 matches played here have been won while chasing. In 5 of those games, the winner of the toss opted to bowl first and we are expecting the same in this match as well.
The Gaddafi Stadium is a high-scoring venue and we saw more than 700 runs scored here in the last match. The surface is flat and hard, allowing the ball to come nicely onto the bat. Scoring runs will be easy here, especially once the batsmen are settled down. That said, the faster bowlers will get some help with the new ball but any loose deliveries will be punished.
The team batting first will look to score at least 330-340 runs.
The weather will remain overcast with temperatures of between 20 and 25 degrees.
Both teams are struggling for their first win and any slip-up will almost certainly see them going out of the tournament. England is the favorite team to win this match thanks to their experienced batting lineup. However, Afghanistan has shown that they are capable of springing a surprise when least expected from them. We can therefore expect an exciting contest.
Bet on England to win this match.
