SLW vs BANW Team Previews

Sri Lanka Women

Sri Lanka played well during the previous edition of the Asia Cup, where it managed to make it to the finals. However, they were completely outplayed by India in that match, and lost by a huge margin. Nevertheless, the team has had plenty of positives since then and will hope to make a winning start to their campaign.

Sri Lanka has won 9 of its last 12 T20 matches which include series wins against England and more recently, South Africa. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu is in brilliant form with the bat and has scored 371 runs so far this year at an average of 33.72.

She is likely to be joined by Vishmi Gunaratne as her opening partner. Anushka Sanjeewani makes a comeback to the squad and will add strength to the middle order as she joins the likes of Nilakshi de Silva, Harshitha Samarawickrama, and Hasini Perera.

The hosts have bet heavily on its spinners with Kavisha Dilhari, Sugandika Kumari, and Inoshi Priyadarshini finding a place in the squad. Udeshika Prabodhani and Achini Kulasuriya are likely to be the two seamers in the team.

Bangladesh Women

Barring India, Bangladesh is the only team who has lifted the Women’s Asia Cup title, back in 2018. However, in the last edition, they failed to make it to the playoffs, finishing 5th on the points table.

Rumana Ahmed and Jahanara Alam make a comeback to the international squad after a long hiatus. The duo put up a spirited performance in the recent edition of Dhaka Premier Edition Women’s League. Their experience will go a long way in boosting the team’s confidence as Bangladesh comes into this contest on the back of consecutive whitewashes against Australia and India.

The batting has been one of the biggest letdowns for the team in recent past. The selection committee has tried to address that issue by bringing in Ishma Tanjim, who can play the big shots during the Powerplay. Nigar Sultana has led the team from the front in recent games and going through a good patch with the bat.

Dilara Akter is another batter to watch out for thanks to her hard-hitting skills. Coming to the bowling, Sabikun Nahar is likely to join Nahida Akter and Rumana Akter in the spin department while the inclusion of Jahanara Alam will bolster the pace attack.

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch at Dambulla is on the dry side and offers an even contest between the bat and the ball. There are a couple of patches of grass that the quicker bowlers can aim for. The ball moves around a bit and the batters need to watchful while playing their shots.

The spinners will get plenty of help as well. Anything over 150 will be difficult to chase.

The weather is likely to be warm and humid with temperatures of around 28 degrees.
