The Sunrisers have never lost to the Super Giants. But that record only spans one season, when they shared a washout in Durban after the Eastern Cape team had won in Port Elizabeth.

SEC vs DSG Team Previews

Sunrisers Eastern Cape

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the reigning SA20 champions after beating the Pretoria Capitals in last year's inaugural final. Their title defence is going to be challenging - and the start of it has already had to weather a washout with the Super Kings recently.

They have a five-strong contingent of England players, comprising fast bowler Brydon Carse, spinner Liam Dawson and batters Dawid Malan, Adam Rossington and Tom Abell. But, as per tournament rules, they will only be allowed to play four overseas recruits in the XI.

Rossington was a key performer for the Eastern Cape side last year and will likely open the batting with the Proteas' Aiden Markram or Temba Bavuma again. Markram will captain the team again. He recently struck a superb Test century against India on a tricky pitch at Newlands.

The Sunrisers lost fast bowler Sisanda Magala to injury shortly before this season's SA20 started. England all-rounder Craig Overton also withdrew. The Eastern Cape team's bowling resources have also been depleted by the absence of spinner Roelof van der Merwe. He was their leading wicket-taker last season, but was not available for this season.

Jordan Hermann, Adam Rossington, Thomas Abell, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, Liam Dawson, Marco Jansen, Beyers Swanepoel, Simon Harmer, Daniel Worrall, Ottneil Baartman.

Durban Super Giants

Durban's Super Giants ended last season in second-last position, but have started well this year on the back of a convincing win over MI Cape Town. They are already looking like an improved unit compared to the disappointing outfit they put out in 2023.

Durban, like the Eastern Cape, have also suffered some bowling exits. Seamers Kyle Abbott and Dilshan Madushanka have left the squad. England's Richard Gleeson and Boland's Hardus Vijoen have been added. They also have England's Reece Topley, who is arguably one of the best left-armers in the tournament.

The Super Giants can again centre their batting exploits around the talent of the hard-hitting Heinrich Klaasen, who struck a characteristically brisk 85 against MI Cape Town recently. They also have Quinton de Kock, but there must not be an overreliance on these two. Matthew Breetzke and company need to step up as well.

Durban will also want to get the most out of West Indian batter Nicholas Pooran while he is still around. Pooran will soon leave to play for MI Emirates in the International League T20 in the United Arab Emirates. This could be his cue to start signing off in South Africa in style.

SEC vs DSG Toss Prediction

St George's Park in Port Elizabeth hosted five matches in the 2023 SA20. On four occasions, the team to win the toss decided to bowl first.

The same is likely here. The toss-winning captain will probably want to chase - not set - a target. This is the general trend in T20 cricket at this ground.

Pitch and Conditions

The last three first-innings scores in the SA20 at this ground have been 210, 130 and 127. A first-innings score of about 160-plus can be considered competitive here.

St George's Park is known as one of the most spin-friendly venues in South Africa. Specialist slow bowlers Dawson and Simon Harmer could enjoy conditions in Port Elizabeth.

The wet weather that washed out the opening fixture of this season's SA20 in Port Elizabeth looks to have cleared. We should get in a full, uninterrupted match, on Saturday.
