RSA vs WI Match Prediction - Mar 25, 2023

We are now in the last leg of the West Indies tour to South Africa as the two teams clash for a 3-match T20 series, beginning this weekend. The first match will be played at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Looking at the way both the teams have performed during the ODI matches, we are surely in for another treat here. Let’s see how both teams stack up against each other.

RSA vs WI Team Previews

South Africa

The series marks a change in the leadership of the South African side as Aiden Markram takes over the reins from Temba Bavuma as the captain of the team in the shortest format of the game after the latter had a terrible time in T20s during 2022. Bavuma has been dropped altogether from the side and given some time off to pick himself up.

Markram has some solid credentials to back himself, as he led South Africa’s U-19 team to a World Cup win back in 2014, and more recently, the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to win the inaugural SA20 title. He will hope to carry on with the solid form that he portrayed in the Test series against West Indies earlier in this tour.

He has a lot of firepower at his disposal, as the likes of Rilee Rossouw, Reeza Hendricks, and Quinton de Kock have been in good form in the various T20 leagues that they have featured in. Heinrich Klaasen scored a blistering century in the 3rd ODI to help the hosts level the series and that is likely to earn him a spot in the playing eleven, while David Miller too will be raring to have a go.

Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada are the two quality seamers on the team. Bjorn Fortuin too may find a place here after his exploits in the ODIs, while Tabraiz Shamsi remains the only full-time spinner in the squad.

West Indies

West Indies had a torrid time during the Test series as they were whitewashed 2-0 and most cricket pundits had written them off for the ODI series too. However, Shai Hope, who was leading the team for the first time did a superb job and the visitors were well on track to clinch the ODI series until a masterclass from Klaasen stopped them in their tracks.

West Indies have made a few tweaks to their squad from the ODI series as Rovman Powell replaces Hope as the captain of the team. He will have the services of Kyle Mayers and Brandon King at the top of the order, both of whom are scoring some quick runs.

Shai Hope will miss out on the T20s, along with Shannon Gabriel, Roston Chase, and Keacy Carty. Nicholas Pooran is expected to play an important role here, while Powell along with Jason Holder and Shamarh Brooks add heft to the middle order. Alzarri Joseph did an excellent job with the ball in the ODI s and is likely to join Sheldon Cottrell in the pace attack, while Akeal Hosein too may keep his place.

The presence of all-rounders gives Powell a lot of flexibility to make changes in the bowling attack, especially during the death. Overall, West Indies have put up a good squad to take on the hosts.

RSA vs WI Toss Prediction

The team winning the toss will likely bat first here.

Pitch and Conditions

The surface at the SuperSport Park in Centurion is flat and offers plenty of bounce and pace to the quicker bowlers. However, there is little in here for the spinners. The batsmen will need to be a bit cautious initially and will need to get their eye in before they start hitting the ball.

However, the lightning-fast outfield will help the batsmen score plenty of boundaries. A score of over 170 will be difficult to chase here. The weather will remain overcast throughout the day with some occasional showers that may disrupt proceedings.

RSA vs WI Betting Tips

While the West Indies made a good comeback in the ODIs, we think that the momentum is with the hosts here. They have a stronger batting line-up which is better suited to play under these conditions. Also, the team has some quality seamers in their squad, including Sisanda Magala, Ngidi, and Rabada, who will play a key role here.

The pitch at the SuperSport Park is flat and has a good bounce, allowing the batsmen to play their shots once they get their eye in. There isn’t much turn for the spinners, allowing the batsmen to hit across the line toward the shorter boundaries. Also, the outfield is quite fast, so we think that the batsmen will easily score over 18.5 runs in an over here.
