Quetta Gladiators

The Quetta Gladiators haven’t had the best of starts, as they have lost 3 of the 4 matches played so far. They seem to be struggling in all aspects of the game and will find it difficult to turn things around against a tough opposition like Islamabad.

The team has some of the biggest names in T20 cricket in their squad, including Martin Guptill, Jason Roy, and Iftikhar Ahmed, but they have lacked consistency in their performance. For example, Guptill scored a brilliant century in the match against Karachi Kings but has managed scores of 15, 12, and 7 in the other 3 matches.

As a result, the team has been unable to put up big scores and that has been one of the prime reasons for their poor performance. The middle order consisting of Sarfaraz Ahmed, Odean Smith, and Mohammad Nawaz too has struggled. In the bowling department, Mohammad Hasnain has done well to pick up 6 wickets so far and has received decent support from Qais Ahmad.

However, their prime bowler, Naseem Shah, seems to be going through a rough patch as he has managed to scalp just 2 wickets so far. The team will need to make improvements in all spheres if they want to move into the top-4. 

Islamabad United

Islamabad United had faced a heavy defeat at the hands of Multan Sultans in their second match of the season but bounced right back, as they had a thumping victory over Peshawar Zalmi in their latest outing.

Hasan Ali and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, both of whom were playing their first match of the season, showed exceptional form and were the key players in Islamabad’s victory. Hasan Ali picked up 3 wickets, removing the big hitters’ Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Rovman Powell, and James Neesham, and limited Peshawar to a modest total of 156-8 on what was an excellent track to bat on.

Islamabad lost Colin Munro quite early in the chase, but Gurbaz and Rassie van der Dussen took the attack to the opposition bowlers and very rapidly brought down the asking rate. Asif Ali played a cameo of 29 off just 13 deliveries as Islamabad achieved the target inside 15 overs and greatly improved their NRR.

The form of Azam Khan and Shadab Khan remains a bit of a concern for the team as they are yet to play to their full potential. Hasan Ali is expected to lead the pace attack, with Rumman Raees and Tom Curran supporting him and all 3 have been able to pick wickets at regular intervals.

The spinners however have struggled so far, with Shadab, in particular, getting taken for a lot of runs.
