NZ vs RSA Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Feb 03, 2024

New Zealand will be playing its first Test of the home summer against a depleted South African side. The reality of cricket nowadays is such that domestic T20 competitions are prioritized over World Test Championship matches. The odds are very short for New Zealand, indicating they are heavy favorites. As we have seen in Test cricket over the last few days, though, do not count out any side just because it is under pressure.

NZ vs RSA Team Previews

New Zealand

New Zealand has a full-strength team available for this series. Kane Williamson is fit again and is expected to play. The same is true for Tom Blundell and Kyle Jamieson. This could be a historic series for New Zealand ad it has never beaten South Africa in a Test series before, New Zealand is also third in the WTC standings behind South Africa and this is a great opportunity to jump into the top 2.

The batting for New Zealand is quite settled and very strong. Devon Conway, Will Young, and Kane Williamson lead the charge with players like Daryll Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Tom Blundell, and perhaps Rachin Ravindra in the mix as well.

The conditions for batting are generally very favorable in New Zealand and so a number of batters will be hoping to cash in against an inexperienced South African lineup.

The bowling lineup will be led by Tim Southee who also has Kyle Jamieson, Neil Wagner, and maybe Matt Henry for support. The final combination will depend on the conditions but we think New Zealand will be tempted to play four fast bowlers.

A strong well-settled team with no obvious weaknesses. It is easy to see why New Zealand is the heavy favorite to win this contest.

South Africa

South Africa is second in the World Test Championship and would probably love to prioritize Test cricket, however, the financial realities of cricket mean that it has to leat all of its first-choice players play T20 cricket at home in the SA20.

Their squad is full of uncapped players, including their captain, and is being written off even before a single ball is bowled. We do not agree with his at all.

Not only does South Africa have a very deep talent pool in its system, it has also given its players two weeks to get used to the conditions. They have been in New Zealand for a fair bit of time and are slowly but surely getting used to the challenge ahead.

The bowling attack has a lot of experience thanks to the presence of Dane Piedt, Duanne Olivier, and Dane Paterson. They will ensure that South Africa asks tough questions of New Zealand at all stages. Tshepo Moreki is expected to take up the remaining bowling spot in the lineup.

Among the batters, Raynard van Tonder, Zubair Hamza, David Bedingham, Keegan Petersen, and Khaya Zondo have all either had a taste of international cricket or have been on the fringes of selection for quite some time. Make no mistake, this is not a batting lineup that you want to take lightly.

NZ vs RSA Toss Prediction

The team that wins the toss is going to want to bowl first. We have seen in New Zealand that bowlers get the most help up front and then the pitch flattens out quite quickly.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

There is some rain around in New Zealand and we could lose a lot of time over the first couple of days. The weather is expected to get better after that so enough time for a result should still be there. The pitch has some green on it and is result-oriented.

There will be help for the bowlers, especially first up, and then the batters will be able to score as the pitch keeps flattening out. In contrast to India, the pitch almost seems to get better for batting with each inning in New Zealand.

The odds are a bit low but we consider this as free money. With the number of superb Kiwi batters available for selection, a full-strength New Zealand bowling attack to put pressure on the South Africans, New Zealand is more than likely to end up having the top batter.

Jamieson is returning from injury but he has been playing competitive cricket in New Zealand. He is extremely tough to face in helpful conditions and gets disconcerting bounce from a length. We can see him having a fantastic match against the South Africans. Worth a punt.
