NZ vs BAN Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Dec 22, 2023

New Zealand and Bangladesh will meet for the final ODI of their three-match series. The Black Caps have an unassailable lead and can complete a series whitewash, while the Tigers will pursue a consolation victory.

You can look forward to plenty to bet on before and during this match. Let's see what the cricket markets and betting odds have in store for this fixture in Napier.

New Zealand vs Bangladesh head-to-head record

New Zealand have 12 wins from their last 13 ODI meetings against Bangladesh. The one the Kiwis didn't win was a washout. Bangladesh have not beaten the New Zealanders in this format of the international game since 2017 in Cardiff. Bangladesh have never won an ODI against New Zealand in New Zealand.

NZ vs BAN Team Previews

New Zealand

New Zealand were dominant with the bat in the second ODI, but would appreciate an improved performance with the ball here. They allowed Bangladesh to get to a final total of 291 all out before reaching the 292-run target with 22 deliveries to spare.

Will Young weighed in with 89, Rachin Ravindra 45 and Henry Nicholls 95 before Tom Latham's 34 not out and Tom Blundell's 24 not out added the finishing touches. The Black Caps will take confidence from the fact that they put in a big performance with the bat despite the absence of Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell.

William O'Rourke and Jacob Duffy claimed three wickets each in the second ODI. They're in solid form as individuals and a combination, as the Kiwis continue to look to their seam resources beyond Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Matt Henry.

New Zealand won't view this fixture as a deadrubber. They will see it as an opportunity to set a precedent ahead of the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh. The hosts might tinker with the playing XI a bit, but the same ambition to win - and win comfortably - should remain.

New Zealand Playing 11

Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Henry Nicholls, Tom Latham, Tom Blundell, Mark Chapman, Josh Clarkson, Adam Milne, Adithya Ashok, Jacob Duffy, William O'Rourke.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh, too, won't see this as a deadrubber. They've lost the series, but a maiden ODI win against New Zealand in New Zealand is still a major target. They can also set a competitive edge before the T20I series against the Kiwis. Bangladesh know how to win in foreign conditions, away from home, and here is another chance to do just that.

Soumya Sarkar was remarkable during the previous fixture. He was named player of the match despite Bangladesh losing the fixture. Sarkar struck a big century, collecting 22 fours and twin sixes en route to 169 from 151 deliveries. This time, the Tigers will want more batters to support him.

Anamul Haque, Litton Das and several other Bangladesh batters failed in Nelson and will face similar conditions in Napier. Being able to successfully combat the swing and seam generated by Duffy and O'Rourke could be central to Bangladesh's cause with the bat.

Hasan Mahmud was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers in the second ODI. He took two wickets, but proved costly - and needs to strike an appropriate balance this time. He's a promising fast bowler - and a good complement to the rest of Bangladesh's spin-laden bowling attack.

Bangladesh Playing 11

Soumya Sarkar, Anamul Haque, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Litton Das, Towhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Mustafizur Rahman, Mohammad Rishad Hossain, Shoriful Islam.

NZ vs BAN Toss Prediction

Four of the last five ODIs at McLean Park in Napier have been won by the team batting first. On three of those five occasions, the toss-winning captain elected to bat first.

It is probable the team to win the toss this time will elect to bat first as well. There is history and recent evidence to suggest that setting rather than chasing a target is preferred at this ground, particularly in ODI cricket.

Pitch and Conditions

The last three ODIs at this venue have produced first-innings totals of 232, 157 and 175. A first-innings score, this time, of 250-plus could be considered competitive.

McLean Park has relatively short square boundaries, but an evenly balanced pitch for the battle between bat and ball can compensate for the brief distance to the ropes.

Both teams can consider playing two specialist spinners here. Bangladesh almost certainly will commit to this tactic. No rain is forecast in Napier on matchday. We should get a full fixture in.

NZ vs BAN Betting Tips

New Zealand should win this match, even if they rotate the squad and change their XI. They are hugely experienced in ODI cricket at home - and will know how to navigate the McLean Park conditions better than Bangladesh.

Bet on the Black Caps to win this match as 1.21 favourites. Bangladesh are priced as 5.0 underdogs - these odds could bring good value.

William O'Rourke to be top New Zealand bowler

O'Rourke is a fine, young talent for the Kiwis. He took three wickets in the previous match, bowling with solid pace - and threatening lines and lengths. More of that same nagging consistency could see him finish among several wickets here again, too.

Soumya Sarkar to be top Bangladesh batter

Sarkar was masterful in the previous fixture. Scoring a big ODI century away from home, especially in New Zealand, is a big feat for any visiting batter. He can take the lessons from that match into this one.

Rachin Ravindra to be to New Zealand batter

Ravindra should open the batting again and have the opportunity to score quickly and relatively freely in the opening powerplay, especially if New Zealand bat first. He was recently signed by the Chennai Super Kings for next year's Indian Premier League.
