NZ vs AUS Team Previews

New Zealand

New Zealand lost the series opener after failing to successfully defend a big 216-run target. The Aussies exposed plenty of shortcomings amid the home team's bowling attack, which was without fast bowler Trent Boult and seamer Daryl Mitchell.

It will be interesting to see if the Black Caps return Boult to the XI for this second T20I. Mitchell will again be unavailable. The hosts bowled eight overs of spin in the series opener - and will likely continue with this ploy after moving from Wellington to Auckland.

New Zealand's top- through middle-order enjoyed good starts in the first match of the series. Finn Allen put in 32, Rachin Ravindra 68 and Devon Conway 63. One or more of these players would like to have converted to a bigger knock - here's another chance for them to do just that.

Australia

Australia were outstanding during their triumphant pursuit in the series opener. They showed why they will be among the genuine title contenders come the T20 World Cup later this year. They have excellent depth among their batters and their bowling resources are versatile.

The Aussies also bowled eight overs of spin in the first match, but used three slow bowlers to New Zealand's two. Glenn Maxwell's ability to not only be a solid batter, but put in some overs, makes him one of the best all-rounders in modern-day T20I cricket.

Mitchell Marsh will be full of confidence after the captain inspired his team to victory with a match-winning 72. Tim David then weighed in with his superb finishing skills. Travis Head, David Warner and others also put in valuable contributions - and could be required to do so again.

NZ vs AUS Toss Prediction

The venue for this match will be Eden Park in Auckland. The last three T20Is at this ground, including January 2024's fixture between New Zealand and Pakistan, have brought three decisions to bowl first.

It's likely the team to win the toss this time will take their cue from that recent record - and elect to field first as well.

Pitch and Conditions

The last three first-innings totals in T20I cricket at this ground have been 226, 196 and 141. This is a relatively high-scoring venue with shortish square boundaries.

A first-innings total of 180-plus can be considered competitive. It's worth playing two spinners here.

Some rain is forecast in Auckland on matchday. This could truncate the match. The team batting first might be given an adjusted target.
