Australia Women will go into this match on the back of recent limited-overs series win over India Women. They have a lot of confidence, homeground advantage - and plenty of motivation to maintain their status at the top of the ICC's WT20I team rankings.

Beth Mooney and Ellyse Perry are among their standout performers with the bat lately. Both have averaged 40-plus in their last 10 appearances in this format of the international game. Perry's strike rate of more than 140 over the same period has, indeed, been impressive.

Bowling-wise, Ashleigh Gardner and Megan Schutt are arguably the biggest threats to the opposition batting order. They are going to have to bowl with good accuracy and discipline against Laura Wolvaardt and company, though, if the hosts are to take an early series lead.

Leg-spinner Alana King has not been selected for this series, while Alyssa Healy might not be available for the first match. Healy's absence would be a big blow for the hosts - and an obvious opportunity for the tourists' bowlers to capitalise against a depleted home batting order.

South Africa Women are gradually growing as a unit under new captain Wolvaardt. This is a big opportunity for them to show some of that growth by outdoing Australia in Australia. We're in for an intriguing battle across this match and the rest of the tour.

Wolvaardt can lead from the front with the bat. Her primary role at the top of the order has been empowered rather than limited by the additional responsibility of the captaincy. She averages 34 in WT20I cricket, but in her last nine matches, that average has been 57.

Seamer Masabata Klaas took three wickets in a recent warm-up fixture in Australia. She looked comfortable in Australian conditions and could really benefit from the pitch on offer in Canberra. Spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba is a complementary force to Klaas.

The presence of Chloe Tryon in the squad is a major boost for South Africa. She has returned from injury and has recent experience in Australia after being with the Sydney Sixers in the Women's Big Bash League. Tryon is among the best all-rounders in women's cricket around the globe.
