India is likely to pair either Yashasvi Jaiswal or Virat Kohli with Rohit Sharma at the top of the order. Either way, the top two batsmen are likely to make full use of the batting-friendly conditions and put up a good partnership.
India has one of the strongest bowling attacks in the tournament. With the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal in good form, we feel that Ireland’s batsmen may find it difficult to get going against them.
India will begin its T20 World Cup campaign on Wednesday by taking on Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Both teams are part of Group A in the event.
Both teams have faced each other in 7 T20I to date, with India winning each one of them.
This match can be live-streamed on the Disney+ Hotstar App or can be watched live on the Star Sports Network.
Despite heart-breaking losses in the previous T20 World Cup as well as in the more recent ODI World Cup, India is yet again one of the favorites to lift the title.
India has a strong and dependable top order that will look to be aggressive from the outset. Rohit Sharma can be devastating on his day, while Virat Kohli was in red-hot form during the recently concluded IPL. Given his form, it might be a good idea to push him into the opening slot.
The middle order is likely to feature the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and Rishabh Pant, all of whom can strike boundaries at will. Dube, in particular might be used as a spin-hitter specialist.
What India lacks is a dependable finisher with the bat. All-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja were unable to make much of an impact for their respective franchises and their form remains a concern.
Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj are likely to begin the proceedings with the new ball, while Chahal may earn a comeback in the playing eleven after more than 9 months, thanks to his good form. India also has Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel in the squad.
We think Bumrah, Siraj, Pandya, Kuldeep, and Jadeja will start the tournament with Dube possibly being the sixth bowling option.
After failing to secure a direct entry to the event, Ireland had to take the longer route through the Europe Qualifiers, where they finished 2nd on the points table.
Ireland has been known to punch above its weight and has recently defeated teams like Pakistan and Afghanistan in the T20 format. However, they will need to come up with something special to beat a team like India.
Ireland will depend on its experienced trio of skipper Paul Stirling, Andrew Balbirnie, and George Dockrell to deliver the goods. Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker are the two youngsters who can play the big shots, while Curtis Campher and George Delaney add versatility and depth to the batting.
Mark Adair and Joshua Little are two of the most experienced seamers on the team, while Ben White may play as the specialist spinner.
There is no doubt that Ireland has improved immensely as a T20 team in the last 12 months or so. They have started to play a lot more aggressively and will come into this match with nothing to lose. It was in the Caribbean where they beat Pakistan in 2007 and it would be foolish to count them out completely against India in this match either.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first.
Since the Nassau County Stadium is a new venue, not much is known as to how it will behave. However, according to reports, the drop-in pitch has been formed on the lines of Adelaide Oval. The surface in the previous match played here was very difficult for the batters with inconsistent bounce.
The spinners might find some grip and turn but we really hope that the pitch is better for batting this time around.
The weather is likely to be cloudy with temperatures below 25 degrees Celsius.
India starts the match as the favorite with very short odds on all betting sites. We see no point in betting against the title favorites. What you may want to do as a betting strategy is to bet a small amount on Ireland pre match and then hedge with a much larger bet on India with in-play betting. We assume there will be a time when Ireland shows some spark and you may be able to get some better odds.
Bet on India to win.
