Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz have been in excellent form in this tournament. They are the best opening pair in terms of runs scored and have put up 3 century stands in 5 matches. On the other hand, Bangladesh’s opening pair has struggled.
Gulbadin Naib has done a brilliant job with the ball. He has bowled twice in this tournament and has picked up at least two wickets in both those outings. As the pitch on the Arnos Vale ground is helpful to the bowlers, we are backing him to bowl a good spell.
Bangladesh will be playing to keep its qualification hopes alive as it faces Afghanistan in a crucial Group 1 fixture on Monday. The match will be played at the Arnos Vale ground in St. Vincent. Afghanistan's win against Australia has meant that theoretically, every team in Group 1 has a chance of qualifying.
Neither Afghanistan nor Bangladesh can afford anything less than a thumping victory in this contest.
The two teams have faced each other in 11 matches to date. Afghanistan has a slight edge with 6 wins, while Bangladesh has won 5.
This match can be live-streamed on the Disney+ Hotstar App. One can also watch it live on the Star Sports Network.
After losing to India in their first Super 8 fixture, Afghanistan scored a historic win against Australia on Saturday to keep its qualification hopes alive. The team will now be raring to go against Bangladesh to further that cause.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran were once again in prime form as they had a century stand against Australia after being asked to bat first on a difficult pitch. The duo is the most successful opening pair in this tournament and will play an important role in this match as well.
However, the batting from the middle order hasn’t been the best, as the likes of Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi haven’t been able to convert their starts into big knocks.
You always feel that a collapse is aroudn the corner when Afghanistan is batting.
The bowling for Afghanistan has been spot-on. Fazalhaq Farooqi is the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 15 wickets and will lead the attack with the new ball along with Naveen Ul-Haq. Gulbadin Naib bowled a brilliant spell in the last match, picking up 4-for, and was instrumental in helping the team beat Australia. Noor Ahmad and Rashid Khan will feature in the spin department.
The bowling unit for Afghanistan has been exceptional and it has not been just about the spinners. They will be full of confidence after their previous match and will believe they can get the better of the Bangladeshi batters.
Bangladesh received a 50-run thrashing against India on Saturday and is all but knocked out of the tournament.
The team’s NRR is one of the worst among the Super 8 teams and their qualification remains just a mathematical possibility. Stranger things have happened in cricket, though, and Bangladesh must keep on believeing.
The opening pair of Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das has struggled throughout this season and that has been one of the main reasons for Bangladesh’s poor run. Najmul Hossain Shanto has scored 40+ runs in each of his last two outings but his strike-rate has been poor.
The team will depend on him as well as Towhid Hridoy and Shakib Al-Hasan if they want to put up a big score.
The seamers have fared well so far. Tanzim Hasan Sakib has picked up 11 wickets and has received good support from Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed, who have 14 wickets between them. Rishad Hossain has bowled some excellent spells during the middle overs and has picked up 11 wickets as well.
The composition of the Bangladeshi side is very similar to Afghanistan's. Both teams have a strong bowling attack but a batting lineup that is very brittle. Apart from the qualification scenario, Bangladesh and Afghanistan have a pretty intense rivalry against each other to spur them on in this match.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bat first.
The Arnos Vale Stadium has been a low-scoring venue. The pitch is hard with an even covering of grass. The batsmen will have to work hard to score runs as the seamers and spinners can both expect plenty of help. Anything over 150 will be challenging to chase.
The weather is likely to remain overcast and there are high chances that we may see some drizzling during the evening.
Both teams have done well to come this far into the competition. We feel that Afghanistan has a better shot at winning this match, thanks to an in-form opening pair and a well-balanced bowling attack.
Bet on Afghanistan to win.
