The batting unit of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape will look forward to returning to home conditions in the hopes of entertaining the home crowd with boundaries. They hit 13 fours against the Royals in the return fixture hosted by Paarl Royals.
The young left-hander has become a mainstay for the Paarl Royals in one of their opening batting spots. In six of his first eight SA20 matches in 2025, the opener hit more than 20 runs while hitting two half-centuries along the way.
The Royals have looked like the best team in the tournament for a large majority of the time. They will be aiming to continue their winning formula while on the road. Having already qualified for the next round, the team from Paarl will play with the freedom to express themselves. Their momentum could bring them another win.
The Sunrisers have the slightly better record in this fixture. The home team has won three matches. The away team has won two matches. Paarl won the return fixture against the Eastern Cape team by a thrashing margin.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Paarl Royals take on each other at St George’s Park, Gqeberha on Saturday, 1 February 2025. This SA20 match is available in India on the Star Sports 2 Network and the Disney+ Hotstar app.
Western Province batting pair David Bedingham and Tony de Zorzi provide a solid foundation as the opening batting partnership. Bedingham played a cool-headed innings of 45 runs at a-run-a-ball against MI Cape Town.
Tom Abell brings stability in the middle order to continue building partnerships during and after the powerplay. Leading the side is Aiden Markram. The captain is a classy batter and a reliable off-spinner. He has one century and four half-centuries in the SA20. Explosive wicketkeeper-batter Tristan Stubbs is capable of shifting momentum in an instant.
All-rounders Marco Jansen and Andile Simelane bring depth as two key all-rounders for the side. The giant Jansen has over 100 T20 wickets with three four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul. Young Simelane has 25 wickets in his short T20 career.
Liam Dawson and Simon Harmer form a formidable spin duo as a spin pair who turn the ball both ways. The experienced Dawson has 232 T20 wickets. Harmer has five four-wicket hauls in T20s, showing his love of taking wickets in clusters.
The pace attack is spearheaded by English duo Craig Overton and Richard Gleeson with their experience and variety with the new ball and in the death overs. Overton’s prolific exploits back home in England have brought him 92 wickets in the Vitality Blast.
Overseas player Sam Hain is a dependable opening batter with a wealth of domestic cricket experience. Youngster Lhuan-dre Pretorius is a dynamic prospect who has characterised himself as someone who likes a fast start. He is closing in on 1000 runs in his T20 career.
Rubin Hermann and Mitchell Van Buuren provide additional firepower to keep the game moving forward after the powerplay. Hermann hit a sedate 28 runs against Joburg Super Kings.
Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik adds experience and finishing prowess. The Indian will be one of the team’s go-to players at the death with the bat. He showed his temperament with a half-century when the team were under pressure in Johannesburg.
All-rounder Dayyaan Galiem contributes with both bat and seam bowling. He has over 700 runs and over 50 wickets in T20s. Captain Bjorn Fortuin is a reliable left-arm spinner who should be highly effective on the Eastern Cape pitch.
Pace duo Keith Dudgeon and Lungi Ngidi bring aggression. Ngidi’s international experience makes him a key weapon. The Protea is two wickets away from 180 wickets in T20s. Fast bowler Dudgeon has best bowling figures of four for five in T20s.
Young fast bowler Kwena Maphaka is an exciting talent who has shown promise internationally. Afghan mystery spinner Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman strengthens the Royals’ spin department alongside his skipper. The Afghan bowler has three four-wicket hauls and two five-wicket hauls.
Both teams could be comfortable chasing. Paarl Royals won the previous match against Sunrisers Eastern Cape by chasing. Four of the last five matches between them have been won by the side batting second.
St George's Park is known for its slow, low pitch. With conditions expected to be hot and dry, the spinners could get more assistance as the game goes on. The surface usually offers some movement for seamers early on with the new ball. Batting against the seamers could get easier once the ball softens.
The team that plays against spin the best, may come up on top. Paarl Royals scored 159 for seven in 20 overs when they last played in Gqeberha.
On Saturday in Gqeberha, the weather is expected to be sunny. The high temperatures will be warm and extremely humid. There is only a five percent chance of rain on the day.
The Paarl Royals have a stronger batting lineup and have been in phenomenal form this season. The Sunrisers have improved their showing and have moved up the table since they last played the Paarl Royals. Have they done enough to stop the team of the tournament in its tracks? We don't think so.
Bet on the Paarl Royals to win.
