This bet should be worth taking a punt on. In their previous meeting, there were 11 wickets in the match at Johannesburg. The surface should be decent for batting, so wickets may come at a premium.
The left-handed New Zealander is a reliable batter for the Super Kings, particularly in the highveld. He should be a strong bet to at least get a start in this game. Conway scored an unbeaten 76 runs in the previous match against Sunrisers.
This Eliminator match is poised to be a thrilling encounter between strong sides. Sadly, for one of the sides, this will be the end of the road for them. The Sunrisers Eastern Cape have dealt with the pressure of knockout games before successfully and should be able to navigate this match. The Joburg Super Kings will be hoping for conditions similar to Johannesburg to aid them.
Each team has taken points off the other this season. Both teams won their home games this season. In the last five games between them overall, the Eastern Cape team have won three and the Joburg team have won once. One match was abandoned.
This SA20 Eliminator between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joburg Super Kings is set for Wednesday, 5 February 2025 at SuperSport Park, Centurion. This match will be available in India on the Star Sports 2 Network and the Disney+ Hotstar app.
Aiden Markram is the only captain in the tournament’s history who knows what the feeling of winning the SA20 feels like. The Sunrisers skipper is a versatile all-rounder known for his tactical acumen and consistency in all aspects of his game.
Tony de Zorzi and David Bedingham will provide stability as the opening pair. The two of them will have a sound understanding of each other through being teammates for Western Province in domestic cricket. Bedingham has a score over 30 in three of his four most recent matches. Young talent Jordan Hermann brings flair and promise as he returns to his roots in Pretoria. He hit a confidence-boosting 53 runs against Paarl Royals in Gqeberha.
English import Tom Abell adds an element of reliability and leadership from his success in English cricket. Explosive middle-order hitter and wicketkeeper Tristan Stubbs will be a key game-changer. He was the most expensive buy of the inaugural edition of the SA20.
The young gun scored a quickfire 43 runs in his previous innings. All-rounder Marco Jansen has been the team’s salvation in crunch moments with bat and ball. He took three wickets against the second-ranked Royals recently.
Liam Dawson is a vastly experienced spin bowler in the shorter formats. His upbringing in England will help him bowl on a track which won’t necessarily assist spin bowling. The English all-rounder has taken ten SA20 wickets this season. Craig Overton, Ottneil Baartman and Richard Gleeson form a potent pace attack.
The trio will have most of the answers to the questions asked with the new ball and older ball in the death overs. Overton bowled superbly in his previous SA20 match to end with bowling figures of three for 15 in four overs.
The experienced T20 duo of Leus du Plooy and skipper Faf du Plessis will bring aggression and stability inside the powerplay. Faf’s vast leadership experience will be crucial throughout the match. He has 267 runs with two half-centuries in this year’s SA20.
Devon Conway is a classy left-handed strokeplayer with the ability to time his innings to perfection. He is eight runs short of 250 SA20 runs.
Wihan Lubbe and Moeen Ali offer all-round depth in identical fashion. Both players are confident left-handed boundary-hitters who can also chip in with crucial overs of right-arm off-spin. Ali has over 7000 T20 runs to combine with over 240 T20 wickets.
The middle order is packed with the firepower of Sibonelo Makhanya and Donovan Ferreira. Makhanya will need to guide the team as they play on his domestic home territory in Centurion for the Titans. He has almost 1400 T20 runs. Ferreira is a hard-hitting finisher in the batting lineup. He showed his sublime muscle with a 22-ball 51 runs in Johannesburg against Durban.
In the pace attack, Hardus Viljoen and Lutho Sipamla bring raw speed and will attempt to keep the opposition batters on the back foot from the first ball. The pair were the highlight of the team’s bowling against Durban’s Super Giants in a shortened match.
Viljoen took two wickets to Sipamla’s single wicket. The spin duo of Tabraiz Shamsi and Maheesh Theekshana ensures control and something different in the middle overs. Shamsi’s wrist-spin makes him a proven match-winner.
Theekshana’s mystery variations out the fingers add an X-factor. The Sri Lankan is nine wickets shy of passing the 200-wickets mark in T20 cricket.
This match is scheduled as a day/night game. Both captains could prefer chasing under the floodlights. Joburg Super Kings won both their previous match against Sunrisers Eastern Cape and last year’s Eliminator by chasing.
SuperSport Park should bring with it a fast and bouncy pitch. The seamers could have the added feature of sideways movement off the pitch with potentially damp conditions around. The outfield is usually quick, but may be a touch slower in this game. The wettish conditions from the rain showers are potentially going to slightly slow down the pace of the ball in the outfield.
The batting innings can be a productive one towards the latter half of the innings if the openers can rotate strike effectively in the tougher opening period. MI Cape Town hit 222 for three in 20 overs in the first innings of the previous match at SuperSport Park.
The conditions on matchday could be influential on the outcome of this match. The day is expected to be hot and humid. In parts of the afternoon and early evening, there are scattered thunderstorms expected with a 30 percent chance of rain.
This match will be a toss-up between two quality sides. Both teams have produced mixed results in the league stage. The Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s ability to deliver in the knockout stages puts them as marginal favorites. We also think the Sunrisers Eastern Cape have a team that lines up very well against the Joburg Super Kings.
Bet on Sunrisers Eastern Cape to win this match.
