3 of the last 5 matches played at this venue have seen at least 13 wickets fall. As there is some help here for the bowlers, especially the seamers, we reckon that there will be quite a few wickets in this match.
Australia is playing without some of its key batsmen including Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh. As they face a strong and experienced bowling unit of Pakistan on a bouncy pitch, the hosts may find it difficult to preserve their wickets.
After a historic win in the ODI series, Pakistan will look to claim an early lead in the 3-match T20 series as it faces Australia for the first match on Thursday. The game will be played at The Gabba in Brisbane.
The two teams have faced each other in 25 T20 matches to date. Pakistan won 13 while Australia won 11. One match ended without any result.
This match will be live-streamed on the Disney+ Hotstar App. You can also watch this match live on the Star Sports Network.
Australia will be disappointed after the way they performed in the last two matches of the ODI series. They had an early advantage but that proved worthless against a searing Pakistani pace attack. The decision to rest some of their key players also cost them the last match.
Coming to the squad for the T20s, the Australian team will be led by Josh Inglis, who fills in for Mitchell Marsh. With Travis Head also missing due to personal reasons, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matthew Short could reprise their roles as the openers.
All-rounders Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Sean Abbott, and Aaron Hardie retain their places from the ODI squad. An injury to Cooper Connolly means that he is out and has been replaced by Josh Phillpe, an exciting top-order batter.
Phillipe is back in the T20 squad after almost a year and will add muscle to the batting line-up. Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett, and Spencer Johnson are the three specialist seamers while Adam Zampa could feature as a full-time spinner.
The Australian team is a strong one but it will miss the brilliance of Cummins, Starc, Hazelwood, Head, and Mitchell. The replacement players are good but we feel they may falter against an in-form Pakistani team.
Fresh from its first bilateral series win Down Under after more than 20 years, Pakistan will be fired up to make a positive start in the shortest format as well.
The visitors have retained most of their core players from the ODI series. Mohammad Rizwan will continue leading the side and will have the services of Babar Azam, Arafat Minhas, Haseebullah Khan, and Saim Ayub in the batting line-up. Salman Agha, who has played well in the ODIs, could play his first T20I here.
Irfan Khan and Jahandad Khan are the two all-rounders who can make a difference with the bat and the ball. Pakistan’s biggest strength continues to be its pace trio of Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf.
While Mohammad Hasnain has been dropped, he has been replaced in the squad by Abbas Afridi. Sufiyan Muqeem too finds a place as the specialist spinner.
Pakistan's strength is its bowling of course but they need to improve the tempo of their batting. A new captain and some young players may help it move in the right direction.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first.
The pitch at The Gabba provides plenty of bounce and the fast bowlers will enjoy bowling on this ground. The surface is true and offers good pace and carry. That also means that the batsmen will be able to play their shots with confidence.
The average first-inning score here is around 165, but the team batting first will aim at the 180-run mark.
The weather will remain overcast and there are chances of rain throughout the day.
The visitors have been clinical in their recent outings and as they have retained most of their key players, we expect them to continue playing well. Australia on the other hand is likely to struggle against Pakistan’s pace attack.
Bet on Pakistan to win.
