This should be a reasonably safe bet. The home team may look to start their innings with intent, but without playing reckless shots. MI Emirates scored 69 for three in the first ten overs when they met Gulf Giants in the ILT20’s Qualifier one in 2024.
The home team is filled with powerful boundary-strikers who could let loose if given the licence to do so. This would be worth betting on for these odds. The last time the two teams met MI Emirates slammed their way to 15 boundary fours.
The crowd should be given full value for the price of admission. MI Emirates and Gulf Giants finished numbers one and two on the 2024 ILT20 table. The defending champions are starting to find their winnings ways again to challenge for this year’s title.
MI Emirates and Gulf Giants have met three times before. MI Emirates have won two of those three games, including last year’s Qualifier one. Gulf Giants have won once.
MI Emirates and Gulf Giants play each other in this ILT20 match on Saturday, 25 January 2025 at Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi. The TV broadcast of the Zee Network and the live-streaming of the FanCode app will be available to Indian viewers.
The top order features the experienced Kusal Perera and Muhammad Waseem. The opening batting pair gives a combination of left-right explosiveness. Waseem has more than 700 ILT20 runs. England’s Tom Banton brings flair and aggression to give the team a solid base at number three.
Captain Nicholas Pooran is an accomplished wicketkeeper-batter who knows how to consolidate and accelerate. He fell one run short of a half-century against the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.
Veteran power-hitter Kieron Pollard offers a game-changing presence with his finishing prowess. England’s Dan Mousley adds youthful versatility as a lower order pinch-hitter and handy off-spinner. Young English cricketer Mousley has more than 1000 runs and more than 50 wickets in T20 cricket.
West Indian Romario Shepherd’s all-round capabilities strengthen both batting depth and pace bowling. Shepherd’s brutal ball-striking was in full flow against Abu Dhabi with 38 runs not out off only 13 balls.
The spin department is in the safe hands of Akeal Hosein. The left-arm spinner is equally adept at controlling the run rate as he is at taking regular wickets.
Hosein has best bowling figures in the ILT20 of four for 23. Alzarri Joseph has raw pace. The potent fast bowling attack also features Emirati local Zahoor Khan and the crafty swing of Afghan Fazalhaq Farooqi. The entire bowling attack was tidy against the Knight Riders. Joseph shone with two wickets.
The Gulf Giants are led on the field and in the batting by the experienced James Vince. His consistent batting and calm leadership anchor the team. He will be supported by Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran as another solid opener who brings composure at the top.
The Afghan opening batter has 2632 T20 runs. The middle order features a mix of flair and reliability The English pair of Jordan Cox and Tom Alsop will give the team a much-needed impetus in the middle overs. Wicketkeeper-batter Cox hit an important knock of 70 runs off 53 balls against Dubai Capitals.
Namibia's Gerhard Erasmus offers stability in difficult situations and the capabilities to up the tempo. He hit a composed 29 runs in his previous innings.
Explosive Caribbean star Shimron Hetmyer adds firepower and the ability to turn matches in his team’s favour. The destructive West Indian has more than 600 runs in ILT20 cricket. All-rounder Mark Adair provides balance with his effective medium pace and handy late-order hitting.
Young talent Aayan Afzal Khan contributes with his promising all-round skills, particularly in familiar conditions. He grabbed two wickets in his previous match. Dominic Drakes is a left-arm pacer who will trouble opposition from his angle of bowling.
Drakes has 66 T20 wickets. The tall Zimbabwean Blessing Muzarabani has pace and steep bounce to make him a lethal weapon. He has 13 ILT20 wickets. Rounding out the squad is Muhammad Zuhaib who is a young up-and-coming leg-spin talent from the UAE.
Both teams may be comfortable with batting first. All three matches that MI Emirates and Gulf Giants have played against each other have been won by the side batting first.
The Abu Dhabi pitch should offer a fair contest between batters and bowlers throughout the full 40 overs of the game. The sunny, hot and dry conditions leading up to this match means that the pitch will be less lively now than at the beginning of the tournament.
The spinners will want to take full advantage of pitch conditions which will suit slower and spin bowling. MI Emirates scored 163 for seven in 20 overs when they last batted first against Gulf Giants in 2024.
Matchday conditions in Abu Dhabi will be warm and humid. There is no rain expected either.
MI Emirates have a perennial trophy-winner such as Kieron Pollard in their ranks. They also possess some of the world’s top T20 stars in Nicholas Pooran and Fazalhaq Farooqi. Aside from their strong squad, they have started to peak in this tournament with a string of positive results.
They will be favoured to take the points in this contest. The Giants’ campaign has been a slight struggle.
