This may be a slightly risky bet because of England’s general batting approach throughout their innings. They tend to show aggression at any stage of the innings. Contrary to most innings though, England started with a maiden against Pakistan in their first innings of their previous Test.
Both teams have opening batters who will look to play positive cricket to thwart the new ball bowlers. New Zealand’s first innings of their last Test against India started with a single to get their innings underway.
England will be licking their wounds after a disappointing Test series loss in Pakistan. The English showed moments of competing against their hosts, but will need to produce the goods for longer. New Zealand will be in bouncing spirits after their historic feat in India. They won’t take England for granted though. You can expect a Test series which could swing either way.
England have been convincing over New Zealand in recent memory. In the last two Test series, the teams have played five Tests. England have won four of those five Tests. The Black Caps won the last Test by one run.
New Zealand and England will clash again in Test cricket from Thursday, 28 November 2024 to Monday, 2 November 2024. They are playing at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Live-streaming will be available to the Indian audience on the Sony Liv app.
Tom Latham has stellar leadership abilities after returning home with a memorable Test series win on the road in India. He doubles as captain and wicketkeeper. The skipper’s experience and calm demeanour are pivotal in setting the tone for the innings.
Complementing his calmness is Will Young and the seasoned Kane Williamson. Williamson brings 642 runs in his last seven Test matches. Will Young was player-of-the-series for 244 runs in his Test series in India. Devon Conway adds further batting strength with his ability to either accelerate or defend as the situation requires.
In the middle-order, Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips offer a dynamic blend of aggression and reliability. Rachin Ravindra is a promising all-rounder equally capable of explosivity with bat in hand. He has 855 runs in his last nine Test matches.
On the bowling front, the experienced Tim Southee leads the bowling attack with his wealth of knowledge and ability to swing the ball. Alongside him, Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy add potency with their pace and precision.
Henry has scalped 33 wickets in his six previous Tests. Nathan Smith is an up-and-coming all-rounder who can swing the ball and contribute handy runs. Latham has a potent fast bowling lineup at his disposal.
Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett are expected to open the batting. They have formed a threatening duo at the top. Duckett’s half-century in the final Test of England’s tour to Pakistan was one his side’s few highlights from that match. Joe Root will follow with the composure and competency to dictate the tempo of the innings.
The legendary English cricketer has amassed more than 1100 Test runs in his previous ten matches alone. Ollie Pope and Harry Brook will feature either side of Root. Both are batters capable of single-handedly turning the game on its head. Brook is averaging 50 with the bat over the course of his last nine Test innings.
The all-rounders who follow are Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes. Both of whom are fierce competitors in both aspects of the game. There is arguably no English cricketer out there more attuned to attacking Test cricket than skipper Stokes.
England’s bowling features pace that will trouble top Test batters. Olly Stone and Matthew Potts are complemented by the swing and seam of Brydon Carse. Although they are all slightly inexperienced, they could be troublesome in cloudy conditions. Jack Leach provides the spin option to mix up the bowling attack.
The toss in the second Test of the previous Test between New Zealand and England was won by the New Zealand who elected to bowl first. It could come as no surprise if either captain prefers to bowl first and take advantage of the new ball with seam bowlers who can extract movement off the pitch.
The pitch at Hagley Oval in Christchurch will be like most New Zealand Test venues with the fast bowlers able to generate decent pace and bounce earlier in the game. Cloudy conditions could also help the swing bowlers. The pitch may flatten out and become more conducive for batting. Spinners may find some assistance later in the match as the pitch wears.
Weather conditions are expected to be consistent over all five days. There is a minimal chance of rain spoiling the fun in this Test with chances of rain largely in the single digits over the five days. Weather temperatures will be moderately warm and humid because of the partly cloudy overheads.
While New Zealand is playing at home and is in food form, England will stay true to their ‘Bazball’ style of playing Test cricket. Their fearless approach almost earned them a Test series win in New Zealand previously. New Zealand will not enjoy much of a home advantage against England who play in similar conditions.
We expect England's batting to be difficult to stop.
Bet on England to win.
