The batsmen have enjoyed plenty of success in this tournament. There has been at least one century in each of the 7 matches played so far. Also, the two matches played at Lahore have seen a total of 4 centuries. We expect that trend to continue.
The Gaddafi Stadium has produced two high-scoring matches in this tournament with at least 640 runs scored in both of them. There are plenty of opportunities for the batsmen to score runs. The outfield here is lightning fast and the boundaries aren’t the longest as well. We are, therefore, bound to see at least a couple of big overs.
Australia will look to strengthen its case to reach the semifinals as they take on Afghanistan in a crucial Group B match on Friday. The two teams will clash at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. This is a must-win match for both teams. The winner will qualify for the semi-final of the Champions trophy while the loser is likely to be eliminated.
The two teams have faced each other in 4 matches so far and Australia has won each of them.
This match can be watched live on the JioHotstar App and Star Sports Network.
Afghanistan scripted a brilliant victory against England on Wednesday to keep their qualification hopes alive. If the team wins here, they will make it to the semifinals, irrespective of the results of other matches.
Ibrahim Zadran was in red-hot form with the bat as he smashed 177 runs in just 146 deliveries to help his team post a mammoth total. He has been one of the most consistent performers for Afghanistan in recent months and the team will expect him to continue playing well.
However, his opening partner, Rahmanullah Gurbaz has struggled in both of his outings and it will be important for him to get some runs. The middle order has performed well for Afghanistan. Rahmat Shah, Mohammad Nabi, and Hashmatullah Shahidi have chipped in with valuable runs at important stages and add heft to the batting.
Azmatullah Omarzai has once again proved to be Afghanistan’s X factor, contributing with the bat as well as the ball. He picked up a fifer in the previous game and is now the leading wicket-taker of the tournament. He will be joined by Fazalhaq Farooqi and Gulbadin Naib in the pace department.
Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad continue to feature in the spin department.
Australia’s latest match against South Africa was abandoned due to rain, forcing the two teams to share points. This leaves Group A wide open as none of the teams have a decisive lead on the points table. That said, if Australia does win here, they will find themselves as one of the key contenders to play the semis.
The reigning ODI World Champions are playing with their frontline seam attack as the trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood is missing the entire tournament. However, the team scored a record-breaking victory over England in the opening game and is unlikely to change it’s playing XI.
Ben Dwarshuis has been the pick of the bowlers so far, picking up 3 wickets, and is likely to lead the attack with the new ball. He will be joined by Spencer Johnson and Nathan Ellis could very well be the first change. Adam Zampa remains the key bowler for Australia, given his ability to spin the ball. Zampa could have the support of Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Short, who chip in as part-time spinners.
Australia’s batting has always been a highlight and this match will be no different. Travis Head and Matthew Short make up for a strong opening pair. Also, with Labuschagne, Alex Carey, and Josh Inglis, all scoring runs in the previous game, they will be high on confidence.
The last 10 ODIs played here have seen half of the matches won by the teams batting first, while the other half were won while chasing. It is a similar statistic when it comes to choosing whether to bat or bowl after winning the toss. However, we reckon that bowling first might be the way to go here.
The Gaddafi Stadium has been a batsmen-friendly venue off late and has an average first-inning score of over 300 runs in the last 10 games. There is some grass covering the surface and there isn’t much on offer for the spinners. The seamers however will get some help if they hit the deck. But overall, it will be a high-scoring game and we can once again expect 300+ scores.
The weather is likely to remain overcast and there are chances of rain interrupting the game. If the DLS does kick in, it usually favors the team batting second and that is something to keep in mind at the toss.
There is no doubt that Afghanistan is the side most people want to see win. However, as bettors, we cannot be emotional and allow that to cloud our judgment. Afghanistan's spinners will challenge Australia but we cannot really depend on their batting. Also, Australia is a much more resourceful team than England. We expect the Aussies to come out firing in a must-win match.
Bet on Australia to win this match.
