The Euro T20 Slam is set to be a city-based T20 franchise tournament, spread across Ireland, the Netherland and Scotland.
Six teams – two from each federation – were to be represented, with matches held at Ireland’s Malahide Cricket Club, Scotland’s The Grange Club and the Netherlands’ VRA Cricket Ground.
The original tournament, scheduled for August 2019, was postponed at just a fortnight’s notice, however, and plans for 2020 are yet to be confirmed.
It is organised by the same team behind the Global T20 Canada tournament, who were beset by financial problems during that tournament.
However, in press statements when the 2019 tournament was shelved, the firm belief was that it would be rekindled in the summer of 2020.
Six city-based franchise teams were formed for the tournament – two each from Ireland, the Netherlands and Scotland.
Ireland were to be represented by Dublin Chiefs and Belfast Titans, Scotland by Edinburgh Rocks and Glasgow Giants and the Netherlands by Amsterdam Knights and Rotterdam Rhinos.
The T20 tournament, in its originally proposed format, was to feature a round-robin group stage split across the three countries before two semi-finals and a final.
Starting in the Netherlands, the tournament was scheduled to feature three phases of fixtures, with each of the three grounds to stage ten matches.
The first ten, sandwiched by the two all-Dutch matches, were to be held at the VRA Academy Ground, and the second ten – with the two all-Scottish matches bookending them – were to be played at The Grange.
Malahide was then to host the final ten round-robin matches, including both all-Irish fixtures, as well as the semi-finals and final on the final weekend.
The original tournament, before it was shelved, had attracted some big-name players with Eoin Morgan, Rashid Khan and Babar Azam among the international superstars signed up.
Several players opted out of the Caribbean Premier League to sign up for the tournament, only for it to be cancelled at very late notice.
The inaugural edition could now be held in 2020, according to statements made after the original cancellation.
