Beth Mooney is among the leading run-scorers for Gujarat Giants in WPL. She has scored 341 runs at an average of 48.71. She has scored at least 40 runs in each of her last two innings against the Warriorz and we are backing her to play well.
The pitch in Vadodara is excellent to bat on and the batters will have plenty of opportunities to score runs. As both teams have some clean strikers of the ball, we are expecting at least one big over.
The UP Warriorz will begin their latest WPL campaign on Sunday as they take on the Gujarat Giants at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. The two teams will face each other in a Day/Night encounter.
The two teams have faced each other in 4 games. The Warriorz have won 3 matches while the Giants have won once.
This match can be watched live on the Disney+ Hotstar App (now also known as the JioHotstar app) and Star Sports Network.
The Gujarat Giants didn’t have the best of starts to the season as they lost the opening fixture against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, these are early days in the tournament and the Giants will hope to turn things around in this match.
Beth Mooney and Laura Woolvardt will open the batting for the Gujarat Giants in this match. They are a strong pair and will look to score briskly during the PowerPlay. Mooney scored a half-century on Friday and looks in good form.
Skipper Ashleigh Gardner will be the key batter for the Giants in the middle order and will be supported by Harleen Deol, Deandra Dottin, and S Hemalatha.
The bowling however isn’t the team’s strength and that cost them the match against Bangalore. Kashvee Gautam and Sayali Satghare are the two seamers on the team, and they were both quite expensive.
There are quite a few spin options as well, including Tanuja Kanwar and Priya Mishra. They will need to be disciplined with their line and length.
The UP Warriorz didn’t have the best of times last year as they finished 4th on the points table and failed to make it to the playoffs. Nevertheless, as the team begins a fresh journey, they will hope for a better performance this time around.
The UP Warriorz will play this year without the services of Alyssa Healy, who is nursing an injury. She has been replaced by Chinelle Henry from the West Indies. While this will be the first time that Henry will feature in the WPL, she has shown good form in her recent outings. She is not only a dependable batter in the middle order but also a handy seamer who can get in a few overs.
The UP Warriorz will bet on the all-rounders to deliver the goods in this match. Chamari Athapaththu is likely to open the batting in this match alongside Grace Harris. The middle order is pretty strong as well, thanks to the presence of Deepti Sharma, Tahlia McGrath, and Uma Chetry.
Coming to the bowling, the Warriorz boast of a stronger spin department that is made up of Sophie Ecclestone, Alana King, and Rajeshwari Gayakwad. Anjali Sarvani and Saima Thakor could lead the attack with the new ball.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first.
The pitch at Vadodara is made up of black soil. It is hard and flat, offering good pace and bounce to the seamers. While the quicker bowlers will get some help early in the match, it remains a good batting surface and the bowlers will need to be disciplined with their line and length.
The team batting first will look to score at least 180 runs here.
The weather will be clear with temperatures of around 25 degrees.
The Gujarat Giants and the UP Warriorz were two of the weakest teams last year and it is difficult to pick a clear favorite among the two. However, we feel that the UP Warriorz have a slight edge in this contest thanks to a stronger bowling unit.
Bet on the UP Warriorz to win.
