Sri Lanka Women To Win the Match, 1.58
The 9th edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is set to get underway this week. Pakistan and Sri Lanka will kick off the proceedings for Group A as they face off at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
The two teams have faced each other in 20 matches so far. Pakistan won 10 of those games, while Sri Lanka won 9. 1 match ended without a result.
This match will be live-streamed on the Disney+ Hotstar App. One can also watch it live on the Star Sports Network.
Pakistan didn’t have the best of times in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup, where they managed to win only 1 of the matches during the group stage. However, the team must put that performance behind them and come into this contest with a fresh mind.
While not being the strongest team in the group, Pakistan has shown some notable improvements in the last couple of months. They recently defeated South Africa at home and should have gained some confidence. With Nida Dar handing over the captaincy to Fatima Sana, the former can now solely focus on her game.
Dar will feature in the spin department with Nashra Sandhu and Sadia Iqbal, while Diana Baig is likely to be the only full-time seamer on the team.
Coming to the batting, a lot will depend on Sidra Ameen and Muneeba Ali, who are likely to open the batting for the team here.
The middle order has some quality players as well in the form of Gull Feroza, Aliya Riaz, and Sadaf Shamas.
Sri Lanka W has been on a roll in international cricket, winning the Asia Cup earlier this year. It was preceded by a series win against England and South Africa. However, the T20 World Cup is a much bigger stage and it will be important that the Sri Lankans get off to a positive start.
Chamari Athapaththu will once again lead the 15-member squad in this tournament. She has been one of the key architects of Sri Lanka’s recent success and will play an important role with the bat and the ball.
Vishmi Gunaratne will likely reprise her role as an opener, while the middle order has some experienced campaigners like Kavisha Dilhari, Harshitha Samarawickrama, and Anushka Sanjeewani.
Coming to the bowling, Sri Lanka has named a spin-heavy unit, given the dry conditions in the UAE. Veteran left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera makes a comeback and will join Inoshi Priyadarshini and Kavisha Dilhari.
The seamers haven’t performed to their full potential and that is something the team will hope to do better in this match. Achini Kulasuriya and Udeshika Prabodhani are both pretty experienced and it is just a matter of time before they bounce back.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bat first.
The pitch at Sharjah is balanced, providing equal opportunities to the batters and the bowlers. The surface is likely to be flat, offering good bounce and pace and the batters will be able to play their shots once they get their eye in. The team batting first will look to score around 170-180 runs.
The pitch is likely to slow down a bit in the second half and will help the spinners.
The weather is likely to be warm and clear with temperatures of over 24 degrees.
Both, Pakistan and Sri Lanka haven’t had much success when it comes to the T20 World Cups and will be eager to get a positive start. Looking at the recent performance of both teams, we feel that Sri Lanka has a slight edge in this contest.
