The pitch at the MCG is likely to be difficult to bat on due to the overcast conditions and a moisture-laden pitch. Also, the boundaries here are pretty long, making it difficult to score briskly. Therefore we are unlikely to see a big over.
Jonassen is the leading wicket-taker for Brisbane Heat and has picked up 16 wickets so far. She has picked up at least 2 wickets in 5 of her last 7 outings and since the conditions are conducive for the bowlers, we are backing her to bowl a good spell.
As we reach the culmination of the 10th edition of WBBL, we are left with two teams that will play for the ultimate glory on Sunday. The Melbourne Renegades W will take on Brisbane Heat W at the iconic MCG.
The two teams have faced each other in 18 matches to date. Brisbane Heat has an advantage here with 11 wins compared to 7 for the Renegades.
The encounter can be viewed on Star Sports Network channels for the TV audience. You can also watch this contest live on the Disney+Hotstar app and website.
The Melbourne Renegades were among the most consistent teams during the group stages, winning 7 of its 10 fixtures. They finished at the top of the table thanks to a better NRR than Brisbane Heat.
The Renegades had ended with the wooden spoon in the previous season but produced a brilliant turnaround this year to gain direct entry to the finals. Hayley Matthews has been a key performer for the team, scoring 255 runs and also picking up 12 wickets.
Her opening partner, Courtney Webb, has played well too, and is averaging over 31 runs in her 9 innings. The middle order is made up of Sophie Molineux, Nicole Faltum, Deandra Dottin, and Georgia Wareham, all of whom can score runs at a brisk pace.
The Renegades have one of the best spin attacks in the league, which consists of Sophie Molineux, Hayley Matthews, and Georgia Wareham. The trio has picked up 38 wickets between them. The seamers have picked up fewer wickets but are equally potent in terms of slowing the scoring rate.
The two-time championship winners Brisbane Heat will look to make history as the first team to win the coveted trophy for a third time.
The team began its season at a sedate pace and picked up steam as the days progressed. Brisbane won each of its last 5 matches during the group stage and finished at an equal number of points with the Renegades. However, since they were trailing in NRR, the Heat narrowly missed out on the final spot.
Grace Harris has been in excellent form this year and is the top scorer for the team with 277 runs. She will open the batting here along with Georgia Redmayne. Jemimah Rodrigues has been the mainstay of Heat’s middle order but she is suffering from a wrist injury and it remains to be seen if she will be available for selection.
In case she misses out, Jemimah could be replaced by Sianna Ginger. Jess Jonassen is as reliable as always and has picked up 16 wickets while also scoring 174 runs.
She will have the support of Grace Parsons in the spin department while Shikha Pandey, Lucy Hamilton, and Nicola Hancock are likely to spearhead the pace attack.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bat first.
The pitch at the MCG is likely to be moist and there will be plenty of help on offer for the bowlers. The new ball will swing quite a bit, and the spinners will get some turn as well. A score of over 150 will likely be difficult to chase here.
The weather has remained overcast over the last few days and we can expect rain to interrupt during the game on Sunday.
Brisbane and Melbourne are undoubtedly the best teams this year and we can expect a fitting finale to this enthralling season. While there is no clear favorite, seeing the past head-to-head record, we feel that Brisbane has a slight edge over the Renegades.
