The Bellerive Oval has hosted some high-scoring matches in the past WBBL seasons. 4 of the last 8 matches played here have seen an aggregate score of 284 or more. As both teams have a strong batting line-up, we are expecting another high-scoring game.
Athapaththu was in red-hot form last season as she scored 552 runs at an average of 42.46. She has also shown good form in the most recent season of the CPL and that’s why we are expecting her to continue playing well.
Sydney Thunder W to win the match 1.793
The Hobart Hurricanes will kick off their latest WBBL campaign on Monday as they take on the Sydney Thunder. The match will be played at the Bellerive Oval.
The two teams have faced each other in 16 matches to date. Sydney has a better record with 10 wins compared to 6 for Hobart.
This match will be live-streamed on the Disney+ Hotstar App. One can also watch it live on the Star Sports Network.
The Hobart Hurricanes didn’t have the best of times in the previous season as they managed to win less than half of their fixtures during the group stages. However, they are now looking to make a winning start here.
Despite losing some of its key players including Shabnim Ismail, Bryony Smith, Maisy Gibson, and Naomi Stalenberg, the Hurricanes have plenty of firepower in their squad to take on Sydney in this game.
Skipper Elyse Villani and Danielle Wyatt are likely to headline the top order, while all-rounders like Heather Graham, Chloe Tryon, and Nicola Carey are likely to add heft to the middle order.
Lizelle Lee is the only wicket-keeper batter in the squad. There are also a couple of young faces available for selection like Tabatha Saville and Callie Wilson. The spin department has plenty of quality options like Amy Smith, Molly Strano, and Lauren Smith, while Hayley Holmes is likely to begin the attack with the new ball.
After enduring a couple of poor seasons, Sydney Thunder put up a better performance last time around as they managed to make it to the playoffs. However, they were defeated by Brisbane in the Eliminator.
Nevertheless, they team will look to build up on the positives and put up an even better performance this time around.
Thunder will depend heavily on its star player, Chamari Athapaththu, to deliver yet again. She was brilliant with the bat and the ball last season, scoring 552 runs and also picking up 9 wickets. She will bat in the top 4 along with Georgia Voll, Phoebe Litchfield, and Tahlia Wilson.
The latter will be leading the team until Heather Knight regains complete fitness. Thunder is also home to a couple of domestic all-rounders like Sammy Jo-Johnson and Taneale Peschel who provide depth to the batting.
One of the biggest inclusions for Thunder this season is Shabnim Ismail, who is amongst the best seamers in the league. She will be joined by Hannah Darlington in the pace department while Samantha Bates will lead the spin attack.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first.
The pitch at the Bellerive Oval is likely to be well-balanced and has something for both, the bowlers and the batters. The seamers can expect some help early on in the match as the new ball nips around and there is plenty of swing as well. A score of around 145 is a par score on this ground.
Things do get slightly better for the batters as the game progresses.
The weather is likely to be overcast with temperatures of around 12 degrees.
Both teams were a bit inconsistent last season and will be eager to make a winning start this time around. We feel that Sydney Thunder has an edge in this contest due to a stronger seam attack and some quality all-rounders in the squad.
