Jonassen was the leading wicket-taker for Brisbane last season with 24 wickets in 16 matches. She also has an excellent record against the Strikers and has picked up 22 wickets in as many matches. Seeing her form, we are backing her to be the best bowler from her team.
The Adelaide Oval is one of the more difficult tracks in the WBBL to bat on. There is plenty of help for the bowlers and going after them won’t be easy. We are therefore unlikely to see a big over in this match.
Adelaide Strikers W to win 1.83
The two finalists from the last season begin their fresh WBBL campaign by once again facing each other in the inaugural game on Sunday. The match will be played at the Adelaide Oval.
The two teams have faced each other in 22 completed games. The Strikers have an edge with 12 wins compared to 10 for Brisbane.
This match will be live-streamed on the Disney+ Hotstar App. You can also watch it live on the Star Sports Network.
The Adelaide Strikers played some brilliant cricket last season. They not only finished at the top of the points table but also went on to win the their 2nd consecutive WBBL title. They will look to once again begin on a positive note.
The Strikers are home to some of the biggest names in the T20 format like Laura Wolvaardt, Tahlia McGrath, Orla Prendergast, and Katie Mack, who together make up one of the strongest batting line-ups in the league.
If at least a couple of them get going, the Strikers could be looking at a big total.
The Adelaide Strikers also have a well-balanced bowling attack consisting of seamers Megan Schutt and Darcie Brown, while Amanda-Jade Wellington and Anesu Mushangwe will feature in the spin department.
The Strikers are a well-led and well-settled side. We have seen that always be a factor in the success a team has.
The Brisbane Heat are among the most consistent teams in WBBL and have made it to the playoffs in every season since the 2018-19 edition. They have lifted the title twice during that period.
Brisbane has made plenty of changes to its squad, dropping some big names like Amelia Kerr, Courtney Sippel, and Georgia Voll. They have compensated for those losses by bringing in all-rounders like Nadine de Klerk and Shikha Pandey, who not only add depth to the batting but also provide variety in the bowling department.
Jess Jonassen, who is known for her explosive batting, is likely to be promoted to the top of the order alongside Grace Harris and Georgia Redmayne. Some of the young faces in the squad include Sianna Ginger, Grace Parsons, and Lucy Hamilton, all of whom have all-round capabilities.
Jonassen will also lead the spin attack while Nicola Hancock is likely to begin the proceedings with the new ball.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first.
The pitch at the Adelaide Oval is well-balanced. There is an even covering of grass on the surface and the new-ball bowlers will get plenty of help. Batting does get a bit easy as the match progresses but we don’t expect the batters to run riot. A score of over 150 might be tricky to chase.
The weather is likely to be clear with temperatures of around 20 degrees.
Adelaide and Brisbane are two of the strongest teams around and we are expecting a close contest between the two teams. Looking at their on-paper strengths and weaknesses, we feel that Adelaide has a slight edge in this game.
