This is worth putting your money on. South Africa opened their account with back-to-back boundaries in the opening Test. Markam and de Zorzi are also naturally attacking opening batters.
David Bedingham is a middle-order batter who loves to play counter-attacking cricket. The strongly built batter may be on for a significant score after not much time out in the middle yet. Bedingham has scored 511 Test runs across his last nine matches.
The South Africans may have been slightly nervous after their start to the opening Test with the bat. However, after their lower-order batting put on a couple of partnerships, the home side never looked back. They were outstanding with the ball the entire game. Sri Lanka will need a much-improved batting performance in their first innings to put up a challenge in the second game.
The South Africans were dominant in a 233-run win at Durban. Their head-to-head record in the last five Tests against Sri Lanka now reads South Africa with three wins and Sri Lanka with two wins. Sri Lanka last beat South Africa in a Test match in 2019.
South Africa and Sri Lanka will meet for a second time this Test series. In India, catch all the live-streaming for the five days from Thursday, 5 December 2024 to Monday, 9 December 2024 on the JioCinema app.
At the top of the order, Aiden Markram and Tony de Zorzi offer a dynamic left-hand and right-hand opening batting partnership. De Zorzi has 549 runs in his last eight Tests. Markram and de Zorzi are both elegant stroke-players.
Captain Temba Bavuma has been the rock in the middle-order batting of the Test team over the past few years the captain. Tristan Stubbs and David Bedingham add firepower either side of Bavuma. Kyle Verreynne brings reliability and sharp skills behind the stumps along with a knack of playing crucial knocks in pressure situations.
Stubbs and Bavuma shared a record-breaking partnership and picked up a century each in Durban. Bavuma also hit 70 runs in the first innings.
The bowling department is led by the fierce Kagiso Rabada. The South African’s speed and skill continue to rank him among the world's elite fast bowlers in Test cricket. Marco Jansen, as an all-rounder, provides balance to the team with his left-arm pace and handy lower-order batting. He starred with 11 wickets to clean up the Sri Lankan batters in quick timing.
The spin attack is spearheaded by Keshav Maharaj with his control and ability to strike wickets after the work of the seamers. He has 31 Test wickets over his last six matches in the international five-day format.
Senuran Muthusamy offers an all-round option with his left-arm spin and capable batting.
Dane Paterson adds to the pace battery. Both may come in for the injured Wiaan Mulder and Gerald Coetzee respectively.
Leading the batting lineup from the top are Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne. Nissanka’s technical proficiency complements Karunaratne’s experience. The middle-order is bolstered by the likes of Sri Lankan veterans Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews.
They should bring stability to the batting group. Chandimal hit 83 runs in the second innings of the previous Test. The versatile Kamindu Mendis is one of the side’s form batters in Test cricket. He started the first Test in Durban with a career Test batting average over 95. He has 966 runs in his last eight Test matches.
Behind the stumps, Kusal Mendis has tidy wicket-keeping skills while also being an aggressive middle-order batting option. Dhananjaya de Silva provides leadership and is key in linking the upper and lower batting orders with his adaptable batting style. His off-spin bowling is an additional asset.
Prabath Jayasuriya will be vital in the latter half of the game as a left-arm spinner. The spinner has 44 wickets in his nine previous Tests. The pace trio of Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Kumara and Asitha Fernando bring unique attributes. Vishwa’s left-arm angle and ability to swing the ball pair well with Asitha Fernando’s ability to do the same from the right-arm angle.
Kumara is known for his lion-hearted raw pace and aggression. Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara took three wickets each in the first innings previously.
Sri Lanka elected to field first in the first Test. That decision would have been a conditions-based decision. Ultimately, South Africa won the Test by batting first. Both sides may be inclined to rather bat first in the second Test with the pitch potentially slowing down on the latter days.
The surface should have a decent level of pace and bounce for the seamers. Being one of the coastal Test venues in South Africa, it may feel slightly slower compared to most. The spinners may enjoy a bit of turn from days three onwards. The batters will place a premium on scoring big in the first innings to get ahead of the game.
There is a five percent chance of rain on day one with that increasing to ten percent and 25 percent on days two and four. Days three and five should be clear of rain. Temperatures will be warm and humid for all five days.
South Africa have won four consecutive Test matches and are unbeaten in their last five Tests. The Proteas flexed their muscle in a powerful performance to draw first blood in the Test series. We think they have an excellent chance to dominate Sri Lanka once more.
Bet on South Africa to win.
